Redmond Athletic Club stands as a ziggurat built in honor of fitness. The 7,500-square-foot space resonates with music, vibrant colors, and natural light as personal trainers walk the spacious floors helping exercisers zero in on fitness goals. The open layout inspires exercisers as they gaze over rows of Precor ellipticals and exercise balls, stretch in the warmup area, or jog on treadmills. A strength-training room teems with equipment such as plate-loaded machines and free weights. Dry saunas and complimentary towel service soothe sore muscles after adventures in sweating and sculpting. From a childcare staff that watches over kids at the Kids Club while parents work out to the group of trainers, RAC's crack team of employees dehassles the gym experience.

Together, the KAF Adventures guides are dedicated to helping others experience the thrills of climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, and other outdoor escapades. Whether they're teaching beginners to rock climb during group lessons, imparting lifelong skills as private mountaineering guides, or leading international climbing trips, the guides help their students learn new skills and appreciate their surrounding environment. Yoga and backpacking hikes introduce hikers to wilderness vistas as they learn to channel their own breathing, and backcountry skiing and boarding guidance readies students to hit the slopes or speed through snowy department-store displays.

Walking past cheerful black-and-white striped awnings and into a studio with lots of light and 10-foot ceilings, students get ready to practice 26 traditional asanas on an antibacterial rubber floor. The Bikram system—known for its use of heat in excess of 100 degrees—is designed to work every major muscle and organ system while detoxifying the body and boosting flexibility. A certified instructor teaches every class, including the original 90-minute class as well as the 60-minute condensed class that helps students with packed schedules.

Q&A with the Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

This yoga practice was designed to be therapeutic, not to be a fitness routine. Fitness is a side effect. People feel better when they practice regularly. Flexibility and strength is gained, stress is reduced, old injuries are treated, sleep-patterns improve, and people are able to do everything else in their lives better. They feel this, and that is what keeps people coming back. We try to support people however we can in their practice.

Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?

At my age, I prefer "move it or lose it". This yoga is all about learning to connect to your body with conscious effort and breath. You will find that edge of pain and learn not to abuse it. In the process, you will strengthen and heal your body.

When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?

My wife Mary has been doing this yoga since 1997 and began teaching it in 2007. I began practicing in 2002. I don't have what normally is thought of as a passion for fitness. I practice and believe in this yoga because I suffered for decades with back injuries. This works. I see it work for lots of other people with various conditions and injuries.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

This yoga should always be practiced with form over depth. This is a disciplined practice, very precise. Poses are performed in certain ways for a reason. Students are encouraged to back out of a posture to their own level, rather than modifying the posture, to obtain depth. This is what makes this yoga accessible to beginners and people with injuries like me.

Northwest Curves, a fitness center designed exclusively for women, provides members with a 30-minute circuit of hydraulic resistance machines designed for an efficient cardio and strength training workout. During the training, attendees can burn up to 500 calories and work each major muscle group to work toward individual fitness goals. An experienced coach is always nearby to teach and motivate participants, and a soundtrack of fun, upbeat music cues participants to move on to the next station. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use your own body weight and fitness level to create resistance. Each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.
