If the endless endurance and physical prowess of television's Olympic loggers makes you jealous, it's never too late to get in the game yourself. CrossFit's extreme approach to fitness surprises many by its ability to blend full-fledged exertion with a refreshing sense of fun. The guidance of experienced and enthusiastic coaches will lead you and your group through warm-ups and an hour-long workout that incorporate a variety of exercises, including backwards runs, walking lunges, squats, box jumps, bear crawls, installing shower doors in the homes of unsuspecting people, and more. Physical rigor will transform into physical and mental empowerment as you seek and destroy your past limitations and metamorphosize into a boot-camping machinebot.
The certified personal trainers and former military machos of Extreme Boot Camp are half drill sergeant, half high-school football coach, half mathematician, and all expert. They want you to go tactical on flab but not without realistic encouragement and support. First, these legionaries of lean will uncritically assess your level of fitness. They'll take down your measurements, weight, and body-fat percentage so you'll be able to tangibly record your progress. Then, after receiving some sound nutritional guidance to aid your ascendance to health, you'll be drafted into a squad of equally athletic peers who you'll bond with through muscle burn and un-ironic high-fives.
This non-stop blend of anaerobic and aerobic strength and conditioning exercises constantly surprises your body and mind, burning up calories and an average of 10–12 negative thoughts in each 60-minute session. Founder and certified trainer/endurance nutritionist Thomas Roe designed these workouts to accommodate people of all sizes, shapes, and fitness levels. You'll train your flexibility and balance while performing interval cardio moves such as wind sprints, running stairs, and jumping rope. In a group of no more than 10 fellow self-shapers, you'll find an ideal balance between the support and encouragement of the group and one-on-one inspiration from your fitstructor, pushing you harder than you would push yourself.
Helping people reach their fitness goals isn’t necessarily easy, but NASM-certified personal trainer and Level-1 CrossFit trainer Serj Khajadourian has a solid script to follow. Every day, he uses CrossFit’s workout of the day to lead an intense, full-body training session composed of functional exercises that can be tailored to any fitness level. Any given class at CrossFit Lifestyle may find exercisers performing deadlifts, squats, push-ups, or box jumps, or flipping oversized tires end-over-end across the facility’s artificial turf. After working up a sweat, clients can unwind in a locker room stocked with complimentary towels, a steam room, a sauna, a jacuzzi, showers, and a nice, cold polar bear.
Next Level Training's spacious, naturally lit facility meets a wide spectrum of fitness needs, from improving strength and agility to losing weight. The gym boasts a roster of workout stations that includes free weights, machines, and TRX equipment. In a separate area, a 1,000-square foot space hosts boot camps led by Next Level Training's motivational instructors.
Dr. Michael McMurry has his hands full. When he's not realigning askew spines as a chiropractor at Optimal Health and Wellness Center, he's putting teams of boot-campers or personal trainees through their paces as part of his insanely intricate body transformation system. With the help of nutritionist and certified group fitness instructor, Cori Newman, the two tag-team lethargy and help their clients beat back the usual obstacles that get between people and their exercise routine.
Each client leaps into the fitness fray with a personalized health assessment, cardiovascular screening exam, and measurements to pinpoint the most effective use of the ensuing six- or twelve-week program. Before the first personal training or bootcamp session starts, clients begin boosting healthy metabolism and cutting out extra calories with simple meal plans, recipes, and a detox diet that takes the guesswork out of going to the grocery store and helps avoid the temptations of travelling frosting salesmen.
Over the ensuing weeks, exercisers cycle rapidly through a dynamic interval training program designed by physicians that replaces reams of weight with lean muscle. A constantly changing roster of exercises, including cardio, plyometrics, and speed drills, keeps muscles on their toes to burn more fat than the first bacon grease-powered locomotive.
