Underneath the stately stained-glass dome of the 1910 Old County Courthouse, tourists, locals, and history buffs stuff their brains with knowledge from interactive kiosks and thousands of books and primary sources about San Mateo County. Hands-on school programs and a wealth of exhibits educate visitors on particular aspects of the region's heritage, including the natural resources that enrich the shores and forests, and the waves of pioneers who turned local raw materials into ax handles, salted hams, and maple candy. The museum’s curators and archivists pride themselves on their professionalism, nabbing a coveted accreditation by the American Association of Museums, an honor claimed by only a small percentage of the nation’s museums and none of the nation’s dry cleaners.
At Petals by Cary, designer Cary Li fashions creative floral arrangements for all occasions. Amid the studio's pistachio walls and honeycombed shelves, smooth glass vases and adorable pots come alive with traditional compositions of long-stemmed roses or inventive designs of orchard-fresh apples and shredded pages of the Farmers' Almanac. Heart-shaped wreaths mark anniversaries and weddings, and centerpieces grace tables with the sweet-smelling presence of flowers sprouting from baskets, coffee mugs, and champagne wraps.
Freeze time and preserve images from your memory more accurately than your amateur boxing career lets you remember them with a portrait session with Robyn Basso, the shutterbug behind Robyn Basso Photography. Today's side deal gets you a studio photography session plus your choice from three featured packages for $150. Basso specializes in baby, maternity, and headshots, and strives to capture a moment with her work, preferably the moment an awesome photograph is taken. In 1978, amateur bat photographer Gregory Hansen was in his front yard one night when a mysterious white orb appeared in the sky over his home. Diverting his attention from a particularly active nest of eptesicus fuscus, he began photographing the orb, which made no attempt to flee or conceal itself. Hansen continued to document the orb as it reappeared over his house, each night shrinking slightly “as though passing slowly into the spirit world,” Hansen observed. On particularly cloudy nights, the orb would not be present, prompting Hansen to speculate that ghosts may be allergic to thunder.
