The instructors at Ultimate Martial Arts & Kids Karate of Fresno must pass through an entire college of martial arts training to be approved to teach. For every year as a full-time instructor, they also complete 40 hours of additional training—a process that helps them stay up-to-date with the latest self-defense and nutrition research. White Tiger Martial Arts Academy, a multi-discipline school, sculpts the minds, character and bodies of everyone from young children to grandparents. Choose from a variety of classes that run from 30 minutes (ages 3-5) to 60 minutes six days a week.
Fresno Kickboxing Academy schools young fighters in the subjects of muscles, speed, and coordination during a four-day, noncontact MMA sports-training camp. Kids ages 8–17 train in the 12,000-square-foot private sports gym under the watchful eye of a staff of expert instructors, which may include former wrestlers, MMA fighters, or extras from The Karate Kid. During each three-hour session, coaches lead students through a warm-up and nutrition discussion, as well as workouts based on muay thai, American-style boxing, jujitsu, and wrestling. The fully equipped facility boasts an Olympic-size mat, complete weight room, and professional punching-bag rack, good for finessing fist throws or practicing do-si-dos. Check the schedule for dates.
McDermont Field House wears a lot of hats. It's a fitness center that houses more than 50 cardio machines. It's an indoor soccer field that hosts open play and league games and a skate park that lures skateboarders with ramps and rail slides.
Elsewhere, its Eagle Mountain rock-climbing wall challenges visitors to scale more than 50 feet. But it's not a traditional wall. Instead of colorful foot and handholds, the indoor wall looks much like a real mountainside: the grey, cragged peak is unmarked, and climbers must figure out their own ways to the top. The field house also brings the ocean to the San Joaquin Valley with a FlowRider wave simulator that buoys surfers and body boarders.
Next Step Fitness' two-trainer team understands that staying healthy does more than just help you look good. Wendy Soto, Next Step founder and lifelong athlete, knows that keeping strong through nutrition and exercise keeps her in shape for her favorite activities. CrossFit Level 1 trainer and police officer Veronica Sandoval works to build her strength, flexibility, and endurance to ensure she can tackle any situation her job throws her way. With that in mind, the duo lead exercise programs that help members slim down and stay active. Members are given 24-hour access to the gym, allowing them to drop in whenever, rather than interrupting the block of time they usually spend winding all the clocks in their houses.
