The Aquidneck Land Trust began in 1990, when a group of local residents gathered together to dedicate itself to saving the natural character, economic value, and environmental health of Aquidneck Island. Since then, the organization has conserved more than 2,300 acres on 66 properties. Along with ongoing projects for Merritt Fund recipients, Aquidneck Land Trust’s current priorities include completion of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail and conservation of 70-plus acres on Saint Mary’s Church land. By working with landowners, foundations, government agencies, and communities, the organization aims to protect and conserve roughly 4,000 acres of open spaces.
The team members at Rok Bar n Grill describe their domain as a "rock n roll-themed establishment" that cultivates an immersive, party-centric experience for its guests. But while dramatic decor and architecture feed eyes, and a packed schedule of events beckons ears, it's a menu of artfully crafted American favorites that keeps mouths and bellies satisfied.
Ocean State Rock Climbing's instructors guide climbers step-by-step as they progress from their first time on a wall until they tackle advanced problems. Initially, they put novices through a series of entry-level routes. As their climbers advance, they then teach them to belay and master more advanced skills such as lead climbing.
These journeys from beginner to master take place amid the towering walls of Ocean State Rock Climbing's gym. Secured by top ropes, rock climbers scale colorful routes and solve increasingly challenging problems. Crash pads create safe landings as visitors climb across bouldering routes or practice being trolls within two bouldering caves.
Now in their 10th year of dueling instruction, U.S. Fencing Association–certified coaches Michael and Anne Olson invite local squires to apprentice under the blade at their 3,500-square-foot sword school. At Blackstone Valley Fencing Academy, students ranked amateur through Arthurian clash in a safe and controlled environment over the course of six weekly classes. Beginning swordspersons are required to take the intro to fencing class, while experienced participants can wield their choice of foil, épée, or slashing saber as they parry and riposte across the academy’s four regulation-length electric-fencing strips. Sessions are divided by age for jousters as young as 7, and you can check the class schedule here. Participants should wear an embroidered gambeson and burnished chain mail, or at least court shoes and comfortable long pants.
