As the sun sets over The Mat Yoga Studio, practitioners can step inside to the new, spacious studio where they can enjoy the renowned Karma Yoga Happy Hour, a free quarterly event open to the entire community features a live DJ spinning a yoga-friendly playlist on his mixing board. Each happy hour brings newcomers and seasoned vets together, with a local teacher leading lessons and a donated spread of food and wine building community camaraderie.
Outside the happy hours, the studio continues the good vibrations with classes held seven days a week, a dedication to tranquility which earned it a mention from The Richardson Award Program’s Best of Richardson in 2012. Typically open to all skill levels, some sessions focus on the graceful sequences of Vinyasa Flow; others center on deep stretching or meditation, which clears the mind more safely than holding a vacuum cleaner up to your ear. Dedicated practitioners can further hone their craft in Advanced Yoga Studies sessions, which together comprise a full, 200-hour yoga teacher training course.
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We form a unique bond between instructor, members, and their children. Clients feel like they are part of a big sweaty family. If you miss a class, your instructor or peers will ask you why. Involving the children in our classes keeps them entertained and becomes a part of their daily routine.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
We recently did an eight-week challenge and one of the members lost 12% body fat and 8% average inches.
When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?
It started when I first attended Baby Boot Camp when my first child (now 4.5) was only 8 weeks old. I felt challenged, inspired by the other members, and like a new person. I started attending classes five–six days a week and quickly lost all my baby weight and gained friends. I decided after five months that I wanted to share my experiences with other moms and trained to become an instructor. Four years later, I love Baby Boot Camp just as much as when I first started, and feel passionate about helping other moms develop a love of fitness, too.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
This program is unique to other fitness programs because of the group dynamic we create. The members become friends and turn to one another for parenting advise and support. We also host play dates, Mom's Night Out events, and family events to bring the members together outside of the workout.

At Pilates Meditation Center, clients can participate in group lessons or get individual attention from an English- and Spanish-speaking BASI-trained instructor in one-on-one lessons. The instructor helps clients build strength, work through injuries, and tone muscles in the intimate, fully equipped studio using exercise balls, a Reformer, a combo chair, and even a Tower to help lengthen the body and build core strength.
After shedding the extra pounds that came along with hypothyroidism and three pregnancies, Melody Chandler founded Texas Fit Chicks Boot Camp to share her weight-loss strategies and support with other women. Her all-female staff of certified personal trainers helps exercisers of all fitness levels shape their bodies during group fitness classes. In an effort to challenge muscle memory, the team shakes up workout regimens by using different techniques and equipment—including kettlebells, resistance bands, and lead sweatpants—each day. Melody’s team also helps exercisers retain their results by supplying nutrition support with meal plans and recipes that use healthy ingredients.
