Nestled in the heart of Cleveland's historic Little Italy district, Little Italy Wines transports oenophiles to a fermented-grape wonderland surrounded by shelves overflowing with bottles hailing from all corners of the globe. Taking place most Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m., the tastings give sippers the opportunity to enrapture taste buds with a spread of pressed-grape goodness that is selected and described by the shop's cultivated wine experts. An included cheese-and-cracker plate provides toothsome accompaniment to sampled wines, delicately pairing piquant morsels with pleasant pours. After the tasting, customers choose between a bottle of red or white wine to take home for domestic delectation or as a desperate placating gesture toward California Raisins threatening dance-ridden riots if they don’t get a share of their boozy brethren.
Alesci's of Shoregate is a specialty grocer and deli that dispenses imported foods, sliced meats, and prepared meals. Freshly sliced deli meats include turkey, capicola, and salami. A sprawling collection of shelves shows off a huge selection of wines easily matched with pizzas topped with pepperoni, mushrooms, or sausage. Daily specials have included items such as rigatoni, eggplant parmigiano, lasagna, and pasta e fagioli, and a selection of breads is also available.
Voted Best Wine Shop in 2010 by CityVoters, Colonial Wine & Beverage offers a dazzling array of wines from across the globe. Colonial's seasoned sippers tantalize clients' taste buds with a selection of 12 wines from its extensive collection during the three-hour wine tasting. Guided by the vinological knowledge of the staff, curious imbibers can ask questions or improvise their own elaborate wine back stories that involve young grapes in love breaking free from the barrel they were born into.
The Vintage Ohio Wine Festival gathers 19 Ohio wineries to disperse the finest grape bloods on-site, offering wine lovers a tasting-packed weekend at bucolic Lake Metroparks Farmpark. In addition to admission, budding Bacchae will receive a free souvenir glass from which to sample sips and properly quaff wines available for purchase by the glass. Festival-goers will be treated to live music on three stages from the festival's opening at 1 p.m. until it shuts down at 10 p.m. Those seeking a more edifying experience can opt for the Wine Education Tent, where they'll hear discussion on Ohio's five grape appellations, why ice wine is so popular in the state, and why Freon wine is not.
Typically, when wine lovers try to find a new wine bar, they look for a cozy hole-in-the wall filled with gauzy curtains and illuminated by candles. When they're looking for the Battery Park Wine Bar, though, they just have to glance up at the towering smokestack studded with enormous red letters. Owner Mike Graley wanted to create a wine bar that would appeal to a beer drinker, according to an article in Cleveland Magazine, that also complemented the venue's "hip vibe and smart wine list of familiar favorites." Bartenders and servers regale guests with descriptions of their more than 100 wines available by the bottle and rotating selection of more than 25 wines by the glass. The kitchen crafts small plates designed to complement the fermented flavors with braised octopus and spinach salads, flatbreads spread with pumpkin-seed pesto, and thoughtfully composed charcuterie boards.
The rehabilitated space creates a modern industrial aesthetic by merging the old and the new. Exposed brick, high ceilings, and a massive garage door allude to the building's past, and geometric light fixtures hang between the gleaming ductwork above high-top tables. Guests can enjoy a drink at the polished wooden bar, stop in to pick up an impressive bottle before a house party, or reenact lessons from Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land at the pool table.
