Amid the school system's flurry of standardized benchmarks and test scores, it can be easy to forget that an education’s mission extends far beyond Scantrons and multiple-choice questions. Milestone Institute’s state-certified educators have this mission in mind every time they welcome a new student for tutoring. After a diagnostic test assesses each student's capabilities, educators craft a customized tutoring plan focused on coursework that's neither too easy nor too difficult. Students also receive focused attention in each intimate group session, learning about reading and writing and using that knowledge to understand why they should never say "'rithmetic.” Interim reports help instructors, parents, and students keep an eye on progress, highlighting achievements and identifying which academic areas still need work.
BumbleBee Tennis's wide spectrum of tennis programs for juniors and adults nurture players at every step of game development. Skilled instructors helm a variety of lessons from Beginner Group Tennis classes to private one-on-one intensives. All teachers are trained professionals and most have played competitively at the collegiate level. While helping students focus on technique and making solid contact with the ball, instructors also attempt to ensure that everyone from youngsters to veterans enjoys the game and knows how to count all the way to love. Adults interested more specifically in the cardiovascular aspect of the game can enroll in Cardio Tennis, a 60-minute class comprised of high-intensity drills and games that elevate heart rates into the aerobic zone and subsequently evaporate calories.
Wiggles & Giggles Playhouse's bright and lively play area lets little ones stretch their imaginations during open sessions and structured classes. Instructors lead programs such as Stepping Stones 1, a Mommy and Me class that develops social skills through free play, music exploration, and other activities. Another program is Scribble Art, which lets kids 18 months to 9 years old create artwork that might be displayed at gallery openings or public venues. As kids play, parents can browse WiFi or shop for clothing, books, and toys at the onsite W&G Boutique.
When Silver Bee Studio founder Eunbi Kim was growing up, her father helped her work through difficulties with math and geography by inventing fun activities, such as flash cards and goofy word games. As a result, when working with her own students, Kim strives “to make learning fun, be tough when necessary, and always encourage the effort and the process,” as she writes on her website. Her lessons infuse classical technique and repertoire with a spirit of kid-friendly enthusiasm, organizing field trips and piano parties and allowing students as young as age 5 to explore popular or jazz music. Her methods also prepare students for success in future piano endeavors, helping them ace performance auditions and the talent portion of home-loan applications.
New York Piano Academy nurtures students of all skill levels—from beginners to seasoned performers—during classical and jazz piano lessons. Using knowledge gained while earning a doctorate of musical arts in composition, classical instructor Dr. Ronn Yedidia instills his pupils with the tools to sight-read and interpret music. Haim Cotton, a trained jazz musician and New York Piano Academy's only other faculty member, imparts her mastery of jazz piano in sessions meant to improve ear training and transcription. Lessons culminate in an annual commencement recital where students can show off their musical skills and ability to make an elephant somewhere laugh every time they tickle the ivories.
