A lifelong hunter and former police offer and firefighter, Ed Tubbs named his range after center mass, otherwise known as the middle of the target. "It came from how I learned to shoot," he told Danny Bernardini of the Reporter. "I'm old school. I learned to aim for center mass."
Tubbs and his team of experienced hunters and public-safety personnel impart their marksmen expertise on pupils at Center Mass Shooting Range. The facility encompasses three ranges that span eight 17-yard lanes and four 25-yard lanes, each regulated by strict safety rules. In addition to giving shooters a place to refine their gunmanship and say words like gunmanship, the range also hosts pistol training. To better serve their clients and the larger public, Center Mass offers discounted range rates to policemen, firemen, and the military and supports several wildlife-management organizations, including the Mule Deer Foundation.
The range does not loan out firearms, but shooting rests, spotting scopes, ear muffs, safety gear, and other accessories are available.
San Joaquin Rifle & Pistol Range's CEO, Christine Z?dor, gets to relive her childhood each and every day she shows up for work. Ms. Z?dor grew up on the range, where she forged fond memories learning to shoot alongside Ervin Z?dor, her father and the original owner?who also happened to be a gold medalist in water polo. Just like her dad, Ms. Z?dor possesses a competitive spirit. She's an avid shooter in the USPSA, and she hopes to draw more women into the sport through her range's Ladies' Shooting Club.
Martinez Gun Club?which was founded in 1883?is a place of tradition. To wit, every Wednesday evening, parents and their kids flock to the club for Family Night. Everyone shoots a few clay pigeons, before they retire to the air-conditioned clubhouse, which features a wooden-beamed ceiling, brick fireplace, and flatscreen televisions. Here, Chef Mindy prepares a meal and bartenders serve drinks to the older crowd. In addition to these dinners, the club regularly hosts special shooting events on weekends.
Former law-enforcement officer Antoine Fisher has devoted his career to keeping people safe, from directing defense courses for locals to working security for Janet Jackson. His school's classes teach civilians how to safely handle firearms according to NRA standards, and specialized training classes help security professionals stay current with the latest defense tactics. Additionally, unarmed self-defense classes prepare participants to subdue or evade an attacker with strikes, takedowns, or by becoming invisible. He also offers special rates for active-duty officers. Beyond training, Antoine coordinates security services that range from supplying canine handlers to securing construction sites and office buildings.

A bounty of firearms supplies bolsters Ammo Depot’s roster of gun training and safety courses. During the Handguns 101 course, first-timers learn how to operate a firearm by reviewing ammunition and firearm fundamentals, shooting positions, and handgun-cleaning techniques before testing out their newfound skills at the range. Instructors also enlighten pupils with a trio of NRA courses, which include the Basic Pistol course, Personal Protection Inside the Home, and Personal Protection Outside the Home courses. Back in the shop, ammunition comes by the box or in bulk, and visitors can peruse a selection of targets, ear and eye protection, or basic firearm accessories.
