By exploring styles of movement from around the world, Movement Studios blends fitness and performing arts. A roster of semi-private and age-appropriate classes includes those designed to improve overall health, such as core-toning Pilates and flexibility-enhancing yoga, as well as those that introduce new ways of creative expression, such as dance and Move Fit! Ballet Barre. Classes are truly multicultural, including European ballet and "Dance Around the World for Kids". Special events throughout the year complement the regular class offerings.
At Albuquerque Stars, students can begin to practice their pirouettes as young as age 3. They're helped along by instructors who respect each child's skill level, and who impart the values of teamwork and confidence as passionately as they demonstrate each leap and spin. Their curriculum covers a wide range of styles, including jazz, ballet, and hip-hop. Though students are welcome to learn dance as a casual hobby, they are also encouraged to complete in the annual dance competitions.
Teaching hips to swivel to new circumferences, trained dance instructors impart their masterful moves unto students in the respected tradition Arthur Murray has upheld since 1912. On the Albuquerque studio's more than 3,100-square-foot floor—a dance destination since 1952—students can tackle ballroom, social, or Latin dance, bringing a partner to their private lessons or flying solo and dancing with the instructor. Protégés may find their new moves applicable in a number of settings, such as when prepping for a wedding dance or when blending into an airport crowd that breaks out in a cha-cha. Regularly scheduled dance parties let students practice what they learned in lessons, slicing and dicing rugs with new fleet-footed friends.
Exotica in Motion's instructors invite ladies to unleash their inner vixens, using the fundamentals of dance for self-expression and fitness. They coach up to four students at a time during Power Pole classes, helping them to spin and twirl and work every muscle of the body. Anti-Gravity yoga classes wrap the body in fabric suspended from the ceiling, engaging muscles in deep stretches and holds without the added joint strain of supporting one's own weight. Teachers also crush calories with the light-hearted, hip-swiveling movements of Zumba, set to a soundtrack of Latin-influenced beats and pop hits instead of a mariachi band being tumbled around in a cement mixer.
The talented staff at Dimensions believes everyone can benefit from dance or music instruction, regardless of age, experience, or rhythmic ability. Dance classes cater to everyone from beginners to competitive dancers, with instruction available in disciplines such as ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Music classes are just as diverse, teaching musicians to competently play the piano, flute, guitar, violin, or drums. And for those more interested in getting their physical form than their dance form, the school offers fun barre fitness classes, which combine elements of dance, Pilates, and yoga into a single effective workout.
