A lifelong resident of West Palm Beach, Marissa first spotted a paddleboard while thumbing through the glossy pages of a magazine. Intrigued, she scouted her hometown to sign up for a lesson and enjoyed her first experience with the sport so much that she bought her first board the next day. Not long after, Marissa launched South Florida Paddle LLC, a mobile standup paddleboard rental and tour company. Meeting up with clients at designated spots between Lake Worth Beach and Jupiter Island, Marissa leads excursions that range from shoreline ventures through ocean waves to calm glides along intracoastal waterways. Depending on the time of year, eco tours bring paddlers up close to an array of wildlife, such as manatees, spotted eagle rays, or starfish. For independent explorers, Marissa rents Cruiser ACS standup paddleboards for daytime adventures, as well as sunrise, sunset, and full-moon paddles for renters looking to hide their werewolf paws from family and friends.

The range of interactive displays, artifacts, and historical recreations at the Palm Beach Maritime Museum ensure that Florida's nautical history isn't stuck in the past. The nonprofit organization manages two waterfront properties tied directly to local maritime technology and the environment. At the Lake Worth Lagoon Education Center in Currie Park, guides give tours of ferry-boat docks and a gallery of indoor and in-water exhibits. Meanwhile, on 5 acres on Peanut Island, an historical former Coast Guard station and its ready-boat give a peek into the past of the famed institution. It's also here that guides lead visitors through the concrete halls of President John F. Kennedy's bomb shelter, a relic of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Q&A with Robin Michael, Vice President Marketing

Have you ever been a patron of your own business? If so, what was the most enjoyable part?

My first cruise was completely enjoyable, although staff members are not allowed to participate in gaming activities or to imbibe in alcoholic beverages. I especially enjoyed the buffet dining and the views from the outdoor deck. The casino floor was so exciting with all of the table games open, the slots ringing, and the music videos playing on the large flat-screen monitors throughout. The Sports Bar and Lounge was full of energy with additional casino table games and slots, the music playing, and all of the sporting events being televised on the large flat-screen monitors circling the entire bar and lounge. I also enjoyed relaxing in the Ultra Lounge and listening to the band play. But most of all, when I walked out on the outdoor deck, I had a chance to experience a mesmerizing sunset and beautiful views of the Palm Beach coastline.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We offer both higher limit and lower limit table games every day. We offer some of the loosest slot machines from $0.01 to $5. We offer the only live craps tables, roulette tables, and Sportsbook in South Florida. We have live entertainment every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. The menu in our gourmet buffet changes daily.

Q&A with Sandra, Owner/operator

Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?

We have a in-water dive guide on each of our dives. We also provide a full range of Padi dive instruction. We watch for marine life during the whole boat trip, such as dolphins and sea turtles.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

I've been teaching scuba for twenty years.

What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?

Our safety record and our repeat business.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We also welcome kids on our boat, many of them preffer to not having younger divers onboard. We actually specialize in training kids, so families are who we like to target, and really enjoy having on the boat.

Rich Brochu combines his love of fishing with his passion for mentoring at Florida Fishing Academy. The nonprofit afterschool program strives to equip local youth not only with a practical new skill, but also a sense of stewardship and renewed self-confidence. His efforts to reach out to thousands of at-risk youth have been lauded on NBC Nightly News, and have earned praise from a school of other media outlets. To raise funds for the program, Brochu’s staff of licensed boat captains and trained guides share their vast knowledge of the region’s waterways during kayak tours, fishing charters, and evening cruises. And because crews have extensive experience working with children in the afterschool program, they excel in instructing youngsters who have never cast lines or imagined swordfish.

A summer afternoon at Singer Island looks like it came straight off of a postcard. White sand stretches out on either side and the blue ocean water blends so perfectly with the blue sky that the sea turtles get confused and sprout wings. To help people get the most out of a beach day on this barrier peninsula, Island Beach Service rents gear such as boogie boards, kayaks, standup paddleboards, and surfboards so guests can cool off in the water, and then can stay dry in cabanas and beach chairs. Adventurous visitors can test out their balance by taking a surfboard out into the waves and gliding along the crashing water as it churns its way to the shore.
