The staff at Hair Studio 52 + Day Spa offers upscale spa services without the pretension that can sometimes be found at high-end boutiques or medieval castles' saunas. Aside from Aveda spa treatments and microdermabrasion, clients can reserve appointments with Dr. Vicky Hagstrom, a physician who administers injectables, chemical peels, and hair-restoration services. Of course, spa services are just half of what's available here—in the salon, stylists perform cut, color, and texturizing services, and nail technicians groom digits with scented scrubs, foot soaks, and gel polish.
Pine Island Golf Course opened on Labor Day weekend in 1994—fitting, since golfers have to put in a fair amount of work to surmount the gauntlet of wide fairways, water hazards, and rock outcroppings spread across 140 acres. Though challenging, the course presents a fair test for golfers of all stripes, earning it a "Hacker's Favorite" designation by Hacker's Guide to Minnesota & Western Wisconsin Golf Courses. When not golfing or searching the woods for winning scorecards, visitors can hone their skills on practice facilities including a driving range and putting green.
Course at a Glance:
* 18-hole, par 71 course
* Total length of 6,563 yards from the back tees
* Course rating of 71.8 from the back tees
* Course slope of 131 from the back tees
* Four sets of tees per hole
Usually people coast over the hills of Coffee Mill Ski & Snowboard Resort on terrain covered with fresh powder. But during the Grumpy Muddah 5K, runners tackle the steep slopes on foot instead, and end up covered themselves?in wet mud. That's because the course has obstacles that might challenge participants to carry dirty logs down a hill or slide on their bellies through muddy water. The obstacles tend to be easier to complete with a team (you can register in a group), but those running solo can skip any obstacle that proves too difficult or requires a human pyramid to complete.
The event, which helps raise money for the Wabasha Ambulance Service, culminates in an after party that includes one free beer for each of-age participant, a T-shirt, and a medal, as well as various food options.
Extreme athletes banded together to design Spartan Races' intense courses orchestrated over standardized distances, each strewn with natural and man-made obstacles to test mind-body fitness, resilience, stamina, and strength, designed to leave participants exhausted and exhilarated. In waves of about 200, runners collect smudges and stains as they perform box jumps, haul heavy sandbags, and juke feral linebackers. Depending on where in the world they're participating, the course may be as short as 3 miles or, for extremely practiced athletes, as long as a full marathon.
Led by Dr. Kory Tuominen, Refined Skin Medi-Spa stirs clinically researched skin technologies and spa pampering services into a stew of revitalizing nourishment. A one-hour head-to-toe tenderization commences with a caressing of the cranium. Aromatic oils are massaged into the scalp while the head nestles within the comforting warmth of hot towels, a security blanket, and an animatronic thumb sucker. Noggin kneading gives way to tootsie tickling as attention shifts to the feet with a sole exfoliation and foot hydration, both provided by Deep Steep’s all-natural beauty products. Rounding out the treatment is a tension-melting foot massage administered with heated stones and romantic walks down a black-sand beach.
Formerly farmland for five generations of the Schmidt family, Lake Pepin Golf Course now boasts 18 holes that span across rugged links-style topography flanked by the bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley. The course plays to 6,752 yards, with 12 holes showcasing panoramic views of the lake and the remaining six holes providing access to an underground miniature golf course. Those who prefer manmade scenery can gawk at Joe "Snowball" Schmidt's 1869 two-story stone house, nestled between the 17th green and 18th tee.
