Over the last 30-plus years, Chris Herzog has been in and out of the ring, competing in kickboxing, judo, and Russian sambo competitions, just three of the combat styles in which he holds an instructional certification. Joined by 22-year boxing veteran Wally "The Weapon" MacDonald?nicknamed for his ability to set off airport metal detectors with his mind?the two provide comprehensive instruction in many styles of martial arts popular in professional fighting today. The academy divides its programs into classes focused on learning a particular skill. Striking packages focus on the essentials of muay thai and Western boxing, while grappling packages draw from Brazilian jujitsu, judo, and Russian sambo. The ironfisted instructors even tailor their classes to kids, teaching character development and confidence.

In addition to individual challenges, the center hosts several group events, ranging from team-building weekends to kids' birthday parties and summer camps. Rock Ventures grants discounted admission to veterans and their families with advance reservation on Saturday mornings, and helps disabled climbers conquer the rocks by using block-and-tackle systems to hoist themselves up. Owner Kent Winchester informs his work at RockVentures with a multifaceted history of leadership and team-building experience, including a stint in the Peace Corps.

Atman Yoga Studio's Enrique A. Fulchi—a native of Lima, Peru, and a devoted yoga instructor—guides students through 90-minute classes that aim to strengthen the body, increase flexibility, and open the mind. The Vinyasa flow class caters to all experience levels and replaces yoga's traditional spinal-alignment exercises—duct-taping tetherball poles to the back—with a steady series of back bends, inversions, and balancing poses supported by steady breathing exercises. The Ashtanga flow class accommodates more practiced yogis, and private sessions with Enrique help to deepen practice with focused tutelage. In all classes, Enrique may modify postures with props to better match students' goals and heighten the realism of their Shakespearean soliloquies.

Christine Fendley, founder of Park Avenue Dance Company, became something of a renaissance woman in the world of dance and eventually moved into choreography, raking in a slew of grants from the likes of the New York State Council on the Arts and the Wulitzer Foundation. Alongside the practical experience, Christine has taught children, teens, and adults the graceful art for more than 40 years. At Park Avenue Dance Company, she leads a troupe of experienced dancers that has been delighting audiences for more than 35 years, performing abstract contemporary movement and the occasional knock-knock joke. The company frequently takes the stage in collaboration with other affluent members of Toronto’s artistic community, including Just Poets and ArtisanWORKS. Fendley and her team of instructors also teach adults and children of all abilities to perform contemporary, jazz, and barre moves. Their story dance and dance-creation classes teach little ones the joy of dance through lessons in rhythm, improvisation, and classical technique. They also help older students get in shape with Pilates, yoga, and dance-fitness classes.
