With its cozy decor and absence of ominous cages, The Dog Waggin’s welcoming facility gives busy pet owners peace of mind as their pups comfortably socialize and play. The 4,000-square-foot digs house a play room with pooch playground equipment—including slides and tunnels—a relaxing play room—characterized by fluffy pet beds—and a backyard, where dogs can caper about or stretch out and bronze their bods in time for swimsuit season. Pups are free to rest and play as they see fit with their fellow boarders, all under staff supervision during daytime outings and overnight stays. The canine caretakers also offer a number of other services, including walking, in-home sitting, and training from owner and certified dog trainer Lisa Harvey.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, Save-A-Pet runs a purely no-kill, nondiscriminatory adoption center for dogs and cats of all breeds, ages, and health statuses, with the ultimate goal of finding permanent homes for each rescued animal. When the center receives homeless pets, the staff feeds them and provides intake exams, vaccinations, and medications. A steady supply of volunteers plays with the pets and ensures that they get enough outdoor exercise to maintain their health and mental well-being, backing this goal up inside by changing the cat litter and power-washing the 82 onsite kennels every day. Save-A-Pet also reaches out to adult and youth community members with education on animal welfare to reduce the number of homeless and euthanized pets. Through the organization’s efforts it has placed more than 40,000 dogs and cats into permanent homes.

Founded in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1996 by pet owners who were sick of bothering neighbors to care for their furry charges when they were busy or away, Out-U-Go! keeps beloved animals happy when their owners are unavailable. Certified members of Pet Sitter International, Out-U-Go’s fully licensed and bonded pet professionals undergo a rigorous screening process, putting in time at the company's Dog Walk University to learn how to deal with willful pets, calmly handle emergencies, and internalize animals’ fear of vacuums. New customers start off with a free meet and greet, with sitters coming to the house to meet dogs, cats, and smaller critters, and discuss special needs and routines. Services range from daily walks to full-time housesitting and pet taxi rides to groomers, vets, and kennels.
When dogs need a break from burying bones, chasing mailmen, and playing professional basketball, Go Doggie Home Doggie provides overnight respite in airy single- and double-occupancy cottages. Owners can leave their dogs with all their personal effects from home—such as blankets, beds, and toys—to help them sleep soundly at night. During the day the pet-loving staff takes canines for refreshing walks and supervises their socializing during indoor play sessions, along with showering them with affectionate ear scratches. Meanwhile, at the onsite grooming-and-bathing salon, groomers treat dog care as an art form as revered as that of a cappella howling.
Go Doggie's facilities also include kitty condos—private boarding rooms where cats can sink their claws into scratching posts and philosophize about the virtues of shoeboxes as they gaze through ample windows. The premises are located a frisbee's throw away from O'Hare International Airport to enable speedy pickup and drop-off of furry comrades.
After a long veterinary career in the Rockford area, Dr. Raj Patel retired. But then an area animal clinic closed, leaving the community without the resources they needed to care for their pets. Enter Dr. Patel to the rescue. At the urging of many local pet owners, Dr. Patel opened Animal Clinic of Rockford, and he now serves the medical needs of local cats and dogs with help from his son Ravi Patel, the clinic's co-director alongside Mital Balar, Dr. Patel's nephew. Pet owners can bring their furry friends in for preventative care, diagnostics, or treatments and surgery—as well as stock up on pet food and medications—to ensure their pets live long, happy lives.
