Though she started out playing “beauty shop” with her grandmothers, Courtney Phillips knew she had real talent when her family members kept requesting that she “play” with their hair too. Their confidence in her styling skills inspired her to attend beauty college and continually build up her talent with Paul Mitchell, Redken, and Vidal Sassoon classes. In 2006, Courtney oversaw renovations on Rocklin's "old church" building, which now houses San Francisco Street Salon & Spa—the realization of her childhood dreams.
Now, by the light of a glimmering chandelier, Courtney and her team of fellow stylists renovate hairstyles with Unite Eurotherapy and Aquage products. The spa's nail technician tends to digits with aloe scrubs, marine foot masks, and OPI's durable Axxium Gel, which can withstand rough-and-tumble games of patty-cake.
Traditionally, the exclamation “ooh la la!” is reserved for moments that blend luxuriousness and surprise. Comments like that often fill the air at Ooh La La Salon and Day Spa, where a team of stylists and technicians delivers pampering treatments that span the entire beauty spectrum. At 14 hair stations, stylists help clients part with unwanted length and say hello to new hues. Treatment rooms provide privacy during massages and facials, and a small fleet of nail stations set in alcoves welcomes the polish-illuminating light of nearby chandeliers. Guests can also top off looks with cosmetic services including makeup applications and airbrush tans.
Kelly—the owner and licensed hairstylist at Designer Hair Studio—has more than 15 years of experience, and she knows what it takes to make sure a client is happy with a new ‘do. She can snip strands, streak highlights into hair, attach extensions, and perform updos for special occasions, such as weddings, prom, and Marge Simpson lookalike contests. To supplement her stylings, she uses top-notch products from Redken, Pureology, and TIGI. Also among her specialties: waxing treatments, which she can perform on a number of areas.
Fashion trends are always evolving. That's why the dedicated stylists of The Parlor Salon undergo extensive additional training with top design houses such as Toni & Guy, Vidal Sassoon, and Wella to keep their skills sharp and their repertoire diverse enough to meet the styling needs of any client. The salon harnesses Bumble and bumble products to keep hair smooth when styling it into a new ‘do or to recall fond styling-chair memories during complimentary bang trims between appointments. Many of the stylists bear training in cutting-edge treatments, such as Liscio Japanese retexturing and Platinum Seamless hair extensions, which use high-quality Remy cuticle hair to create faultless extensions that are undetectable to the eye, the touch, and the carnival's "Hair must be this long to ride" signs. Whether clients come in for a quick wax or a full day of styling, coloring, and makeup services, they're free to savor a bevy of complimentary refreshments.
Waxing is among the most economical of non-permanent hair-removal treatments, allowing you to stay smooth but still compete in a playoff legbeard competition when the need arises. Reshape or separate Siamese brows ($15) or clear your upper lip and chin ($10 each) to clear a smooth surface for better novelty-moustache adhesion. Or just skip the specifics and get a full face of water-wicking skin. Migrate away from the mug and take care of overly insulated arms ($35) or a pair of leggy walking arms ($70). Prepare for beach season with a Brazilian ($45+) or its front-sided cousin, the stomach wax ($15+).
Nine types of facials await visitors at Esthetics by Dawn—enough to treat virtually every skin type. Purifying facials clear out excess oil in treating breakout-prone skin, and anti-aging facials ward off wrinkles by restoring skin’s elasticity. This menu of facials lines up alongside waxing treatments for men and women, stress-relief aromatherapy massages, and hydrating hand masks.
