With a mission to enable deaf-blind individuals to achieve their full potential, North Carolina Deaf-Blind Associates advocates for the rights and needs of its constituents through consumer advocacy and community-building events. John Washington and Sue Etheridge started the group as a consumer organization in 1983, but it expanded to offer annual conventions and retreats to help reduce the isolation that can result from living with communication obstacles. Conferences promote new technologies and advocate for individual rights, and the Camp Dogwood Deaf-Blind Weekend Retreat provides a much-needed space for deaf-blind adults to socialize, share stories, and participate in life-skills classes, sporting events and dances, and outings to local shopping centers or the lake.

Flakes of ice float through the frosty air, twinkling in the light. Rosy-cheeked children skate across the glittery ice, clutching their parents' gloved hands and shrieking gleefully. Though it seems as though it belongs in the pages of a winter fairy tale, this is the scene of a typical July afternoon at Polar Ice House. The hot summer sun burns brightly outside, but the temperature inside the vast indoor ice rink remains a brisk 45 degrees.
Although the wintry conditions make the rink a less than ideal venue for a bikini fashion show, the cold environment is perfect for the skating lessons, hockey games, and public-skating and hockey sessions that the rink hosts year-round. The center's attentive instructors lead students of all ages and experience levels through fundamental skating skills, progressing to advanced techniques, such as jumping, spinning, and karate chopping aggressive abominable snowmen, once students have mastered the basics. Expert coaches captain hockey leagues for adults and youths alike and helm instructional courses and hockey camps.
Amid the hardwood-and-pine forest adjacent to Wiggins Mill Reservoir lie the 18 holes of Willow Springs Country Club, where golfers have tested their will and skill for nearly 100 years. A relatively flat and walkable stretch of 6,641 yards, the course challenges players with narrow, tree-bordered fairways rather than extreme swings in elevation or herds of ball-devouring mountain goats. When success on the par 71 layout proves elusive, players can enlist the constructive criticism of Class A PGA member Jimmy Gurkin, the club professional and owner since 1989.

Since 1968, Jerry’s Artarama has assisted artists through every phase of the creative process, including furnishing their studios with art supplies and finishing off their completed artwork with custom-framing services. They stock their shelves with student- and professional-grade supplies, including Winsor & Newton’s high-value Winton line of beginners’ oil colors and Williamsburg handmade paints. The framing department, meanwhile, keeps a wide range of mats, moulding, and glass on hand to create lavish homes for fine artwork or simple enclosures for family photos and important receipts.

But she doesn't keep everything she's learned to herself. Instead, she teaches youngsters and high-schoolers the world's game, from basics to advanced, through team training, camps, and private lessons. To ensure she delivers the highest possible quality to the youth she teaches, she has certifications from organizations such as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the US Soccer Federation.
