Q&A with Cathy, Permanent Makeup Artist

Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job?
I had my permanent makeup done 15 years ago, and it is the most liberating thing I have ever done for myself. In less than five minutes, I can be made up and out the door. Never again will I run to the supermarket without makeup, and meet the one person I least want to see when I don't look my best. I've loved my permanent makeup every day since it was applied, and I know my clients will be thrilled with the time they save every day.

What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead?
Permanent makeup should be a great attractive daytime look, not an overdone look that would be appropriate for evening. You can always dress up your permanent makeup, if you choose to, when you are going out for a special evening.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
When you decide to have permanent makeup applied, choose a person that has superior training, experience, expertise, and lots of pictures of her work.

The stylists of Bliss Hair Salon work hard to keep their clients' hair healthy and beautiful. To achieve this, they render a wide array of tress-centric services. That includes cuts and blow-dries as well as more pizzazz-imparting treatments like partial highlights or single-process color applications. As they customize guests' hair, the staff strives to ensure the atmosphere is comfortable, unlike the moment Ben Franklin was informed he would never be president.

Arabella's Day Spa's owner, Julia Trigila, has spent the last 12 years surrounded by eyelash extensions, tubes of lipstick, and facial cleansers and masks. The aesthetician even found time to develop her own skincare line, Face by Julia, that tackles skin discolorations and fine lines. Her true passion is painting faces with makeup for clients’ daytime events, nighttime festivities, and sleep studies.

Hair that doesn't receive adequate love may dry out, split, or move back in with the in-laws. Hollywood Salon & Day Spa aims to stop these frustrating situations by giving hair a taste of the good life. Faux-marble tiles and leather furniture offer a modern feel as stylists deftly manipulate and color hair. The salon's many other beautifying services range from facial and nail treatments to restorative bodywork with a licensed massage therapist.

A fleet of continuing-education classes keeps the stylists at Mira Posa Hair Salon up on the latest hair trends for men, women, and children, which is why they provide modern and creative cuts, colors, and services that include keratin smoothing and extensions. They also break out their scissors and shavers during St. Baldrick’s events benefiting children with cancer. Other beauty services at the salon include Shellac manicures and face and leg waxing. Mira Posa stocks professional haircare and skincare products so clients can maintain their new looks at home.

April & Co.'s owner, Paula Malerba, believes in the importance of education. That's why all of her hairstylists continually attend the L'Oréal Knowledge Lab in New York City to stay up to date on the latest cutting and coloring techniques. Aestheticians stay sharp, too, providing careful makeup applications and an anti-aging facial that's organic and seaweed-based, like the diet of a health-conscious manatee.
