Humans dreamed of achieving flight for millennia, driven by the desire to find out what clouds taste like (a lot like fog, it turns out). Take to the skies with today's Groupon. For $40 per person, you get a quarter-hour private helicopter tour from Whirl Helicopter Atlanta, a $79 value. Depart from McCollum Airport in Kennesaw and fly to Kennesaw Mountain and over Marietta Square and the Big Chicken.
The Robertson family exemplifies the unifying power of family fitness. While parents Mark and Melissa manage Ascension Climbing's incoming clients, their three kids—Grace, Caleb, and Zeke—provide one-on-one training in the art of scaling mountainsides or the gum-studded underside of a giant's desk. Grace, who formerly coached college climbing teams, transfers her expertise to competitive clients during one-on-one lessons at one of 18 ropes. Zeke oversees the littlest ones at Ascension’s climbing walls and two bouldering caves, and Caleb fills in the schedule with lessons on climbing safety and technique.
As a tightly knit, climbing-savvy family, the Robertsons hope to strengthen the bonds of other clans through Ascension Climbing’s many activities. They invite families to climb and boulder together during events and trips. They also host groups and parties, spreading their love of climbing through chaperoned events and overnight lock-ins.
The two-story indoor facility at Escalade Rock Climbing Gym is home to climbing challenges that range in difficulty from easy wall routes to 80 feet of continuous roof climbing. An impact-resistant padded flex floor ensures safety during all ascensions, and a punching bag and free-weight area encourage guests to work on building core climbing strength and roundhouse-kick dismounts off the wall. The gym hosts adult and youth classes that help students pull bodily strength and problem-solving skills into perfect harmony and learn the sport's unique terminology.
A shotgun-only facility, Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range invites beginner marksmen to shoot across 20 combination trap-and-skeet fields as well as a five-stand sporting-clays field. At each of these areas, clay pigeons launch into the sky above dense forests and rolling hills. Shooters as young as 10 (with proper supervision) can target the wingless birds during practice sessions and competitive leagues. Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range also partners with local independent instructors, who train beginner shooters to shoot and track the migratory patterns of clay pigeons.
Before hitting the field, visitors can rent a gun from Deshotels Arms, Inc., the onsite pro shop. The shop also sells ammo, used guns, and new shotguns from brands such as Beretta.
Ten minutes from the bustle of Atlanta, hummingbirds and dragonflies buzz around gardens, and horses crunch leaves under their hooves as they amble down dirt-covered trails leading to a private pond. Fruition Farm beckons visitors to relax at this idyllic refuge, whether by swaying on the porch swing with a book in hand or trapping sleepy friends in a hammock draped between two trees.
Communing with nature is reflected in the farm's approach to horseback riding—natural horsemanship, which fosters a special rapport between equestrians and steeds based on respect and trust, motivating horses to obey commands without riders threatening to expose their secret pasts as cows. This philosophy encompasses all activities at Fruition, from lessons and camps to weekend retreats and creative excursions such as moonlight rides and Tea on Tuesdays, which pairs laid-back rides with a catered lunch at the farmhouse.
