Begun as a sailing club founded by cruising sailors, The Sailing Academy harnesses the wind to explore new destinations rather than for racing or other high-speed maneuvers. Seasoned instructors use an on-water coaching method, eschewing copious dry-land classroom time because they know that the best way for students to learn how to parallel park a yacht is by doing it. They helm beginner through advanced courses in general sailing and more specialized courses in coastal navigation, coastal cruising, and bareboat chartering. Aboard their fleet's vessels, which include a Catalina and a Jeanneau, they also take small groups out for charters in local waters. Their location on the bay south of Annapolis enables captains and students to sail free from the confines of crowded city harbors and maneuver more freely. Though the academy doesn't rent out its boats, students can charter a boat for a day, and club members earn regular vessel access.
Western Shores Institute Inc. (WSI) offers a wide range of on-line classes and seminars in the area of business, management, and technology at your location in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and on-line to students worldwide.
All of the Jersey cows at P. A. Bowen Farmstead are named after famed opera characters and singers. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that they're also treated like stars: They're milked each morning and then transferred to a wide-open, protected pasture twice each day, just like real opera singers. For owners Geoffrey Morell and Sally Fallon Morell, founding a farm was the next step after creating a nonprofit nutrition-education foundation—and their focus on raising healthy animals and food is evident across each of the property's 95 rolling acres.
Here, they care for a menagerie of livestock using rotational grazing techniques and modern farm technology—eschewing chemicals in favor of organic, bio-dynamic plant and animal care. Pigs root in the nearby forest, hens roam freely or settle into heated tractors in colder weather, and the bull sleeps at the foot of the owners' bed each night.
The farm's real specialty, though, is its dairy processing facility—regulated by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene—which churns out several raw artisan cheeses. Saturday walking tours across the farm unveil the inner workings of the cheese-making process. Further revealing their processes, their regular classes educate guests on topics ranging from processing chickens to animal husbandry.
Royal Glass, a 40-year veteran of quality glass repair, employs skilled technicians and follows an in-house policy to return every vehicle to its pre-purchased Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Handy staffers stabilize up to three dings in the glass surface, securing the damage caused by rocks, debris, or vengeful lawnmowers. The service stabilizes the damage before it can grow into large, untreatable cracks, and restores visibility for the driver. A headlight restoration yields lucid illumination after technicians tend to soiled lenses and remove light-obstructing films, residues, and cynical philosophies. Clear lenses allow bulbs to project their brightest rays forward, keeping roads properly lit so drivers can safely navigate dark streets.
