At Brooklyn Deli, owners Mark Anderson and Don Bothem slice premium meats and julienne subway passes for authentic New York-style sandwiches. Along with their menu of Brooklyn classics, the duo and their staff whip up custom creations, layering breads with meats, toppings, dressings, and cheeses. Meanwhile, freshly cut potatoes simmer in the fryer, and Otis Spunkmeyer cookies rise in the ovens. Out in the dining area, cheerful red booths and stools line up beneath photographs of New York.
On the second floor of the tri-level Rockton Inn, pictures of palm trees and tropical fish speckle the walls, evoking the elegant ambiance of a far-off island resort or Jimmy Buffet’s billiard room. This same laid-back attitude is reflected by the kitchen, where chefs busily plate helpings of fine dining standbys ranging from USDA Black Angus steaks to sea-fresh scallops. Daily and weekly specials keep taste buds guessing, with popular themes including Tuesday's quesadilla night or Saturday's all-you-can-eat prime rib special. Elsewhere in the sprawling establishment, six HD televisions keep guests tuned in to the world at large, and performance spaces play host to special events, including live music.
Flavors such as salted caramel, Bananas Foster, and chocolate-covered strawberry infuse the specialty lattes at Paradise Java & Ice, a café that the Cutler family opened in July 2013. Patrons can also sip fresh smoothies and or savor a signature treat—Hawaiian-style shaved ice. “[It's] kind of like a dreamsicle because the flavor from the ice drips and melts down into the ice cream,” Dan Cutler said of the dessert during an interview with Beloit Daily News. Rustic blond-wood furniture lines the café, and a cozy lounge area invites patrons to study, read, or connect to complimentary WiFi.
It’s difficult to describe a typical trip to 3 Sheets Pub; on any given night, visitors might find themselves locked in a game of darts, dancing to a DJ’s selections, or just hanging out with a guy in a cheese hat. Pitchers of domestic and craft beer flow freely, along with hearty sandwiches and finger foods. Flat-screen televisions encircle the room where the bar quenches thirst, and a red, neon haze filters through various liquor bottles. 3 Sheets Pub also looks after its patrons by offering a free shuttle service that spirits guests home on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Flickering candles and a grand chandelier fill Sam's Ristorante's high-ceilinged dining room with a romantic glow. Graceful arches and painted landscapes foster a classic ambiance that carries through to the menu of traditional Italian cuisine. The kitchen crafts its own marinara sauce in house to add rich flavor to orders of veal parmigiana. Pasta varieties, including angel hair, ravioli, and fettuccine, tangle with morsels of seafood, veggies, and housemade italian sausage in specialty dishes. Sauces made with marsala wine and portobello mushrooms coat chicken breasts and center-cut fillets with more flavor than a spice-rubbed quilt.
