Not too many people get to make a career out of their childhood dreams. Needville Horseback Riding's head instructor Jacqueline, however, is one person who can say she did. After riding and showing as a little girl, she decided to pursue horsemanship further in college and into adulthood, earning herself a certification from the American Riding Instructors Association and the right to fulfill her equestrian dream each day.
Today, she empowers others to pursue similar dreams by conducting horseback riding lessons in the disciplines of hunter, jumper, and dressage for riders of all ages. Lessons take place year-round rain or shine, and can be tailored to each rider regardless of whether their goals include competing in shows, riding for pleasure, or taking over the carpool lane with horse traffic. Jacqueline also welcomes casual horseback riders to participate in equine action through birthday parties and youth camps.
Karen Mones's passion for fitness began at a young age, exercising to Jane Fonda videos with her mother. She went on to play softball, earn her bachelor's in exercise and sports science, and obtain six instructor certifications in everything from yoga to strength training. She founded Houston Adventure Boot Camp to share her knowledge and passion for fitness with as many people as possible.
She and her trainers create different regimens each day, taking advantage of the city's natural spaces and natural forces to enhance their workouts. They challenge gravity by having students lift their own bodyweight or free weights. Students plow through the heaviest friction the air can throw at them in sprints, and they hold up under constant pressure from the sun to nap in the middle of a field.
Hosting classes within a two-story home, Yoga on the Brazos’ staff of instructors help students improve their physical and mental health. The instructors lead a schedule of classes in various yoga styles for all skill levels, dedicating time during each session to helping pupils modulate their thought and inhalations with focused breathing exercises and meditation. During all-level Vinyasa classes, instructors promote athletic well-being with a flowing series of poses, which uses channeled breaths to link each movement more naturally than a semaphore ellipsis. During Hatha sessions, students practice sustained postures, and the instructors offer modifications throughout so attendees can safely challenge themselves by pushing stretches further. During Sivananda yoga classes, students learn how to relax their minds by taking fully developed breaths and performing a sequence of stable Hatha asanas. The studio helps to prepare attendees for practice by renting out yoga mats ($1) and translating their names into Sanskrit.
