Believed to be the oldest continuously working barbershop in the Northeast, Wedgeway was established in 1912 to give hirsute gents a good cleaning-up. The shop still boasts many of its original accouterments, such as a working cash register, porcelain pedestal sinks, mirrors, bottles, and a beckoning storefront barber pole. Under the leadership of owner Richard DiCristofaro, part of the staff for nearly 50 years, well-trained coif croppers expertly carry out everything from the latest men's hairstyles to time-honored services such as straight-razor shaves with steamy hot towels, as well as facial and shoulder massages. Wedgeway always welcomes clients on a walk-in basis, in keeping with drop-in tonsorial tradition.

Illuminated by hanging lights and decorative lamps, professionally licensed hair and skin artists gussy up clients behind sleek, leather chairs attached to blond, hardwood floors. Drawing from a facial-services menu, aestheticians analyze each client’s skin before swabbing faces with natural extracts or innovative products from Dr. Pugliese’s Circadia line. They can also craft facials specifically designed for backs and male faces, as well as wax bikini regions, legs, and arms. Meanwhile, stylists cater to hair in all its sundry forms, cutting and coloring locks with premium products.

Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe look out from photo frames at the open floor of High Maintenance Hair Studio. The salon does these Hollywood starlets proud by offering professional beauty treatments in an environment that defines opulence—rich shades of turquoise swathe the walls, and a chandelier hangs above each of the stylists’ workstations. These stylists live up to their posh surroundings, coloring strands with Goldwell products and adding length with extensions made from real human hair.

Sabrina Servidone, owner of Gia Bella Hair Salon, has extensive training as a Paul Mitchell cosmetologist. She puts that training to work with services such as the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi KeraTriplex treatment. And Sabrina amplifies her ability to serve clients by teaming up with hair-industry veteran Michele Webb, who has 20 years of experience. The duo snips locks between red walls, white walls, and a unique floor that looks like the bark of a tree—mainly because lemurs are crawling all over it.
