The spa pamperings, which also include manicures and massages, pair with medical treatments to fully make over bods with methods including microdermabrasion, which blasts away signs of age. Salon Du Soleil's staff works to create a clean facility by completely sterilizing equipment and only telling PG-rated knock-knock jokes.

Led by massage therapist and colon hydrotherapist Kathleen Leslie, the natural-care practitioners at Pura Vida Wellness Spa specialize in pharmaceutical-free healing. Services include detoxifying therapies such as infrared-sauna sessions, several massage modalities, and the bentonite-clay body mask, in which the natural negative charge of clay draws out positively charged toxins such as metals or swallowed gum. Their bread-and-butter service, though, is colonic irrigation, which Leslie's team uses to treat numerous ailments, such as bloating, migraines, and insomnia. Their offerings also extend to yoga classes.

A wildly successful alternative to traditional day spas—its more than 300 locations blanket 36 states and half a dozen countries—Planet Beach Contempo Spa is a futuristic relaxation station where state-of-the-art machines administer all the spa and tanning services. These friendly automatons sometimes replace familiar treatments, as in the Luminous facial, a light-based service that delivers blemish-busting results similar to those of a conventional facial. But other equipment maps out new spa territory entirely: the Hydro-Derma Fusion chamber moisturizes the whole body with nutrient-rich steam in order to offset the effects of a dry climate or a rear-end collision with a salt truck. Other machines whiten teeth, spray tan skin, and massage muscles.

Planet Beach operates on a gym-style membership system, meaning that members purchase packages or pay flat monthly rates. As members spend more time at the spa, they get to know the helpful assistants who are always on hand to demonstrate how to use the equipment without activating its ability to cry.

Guests arriving to The Raven Spa may find themselves feeling like they've traveled a thousand miles away from their everyday cares. The aesthetic is both spiritual and indulgent, with stone statues that stand sentinel beside a plush purple couch and lush, sun-drenched drapes and glistening chandeliers holding court over an eastern-inspired communal massage chamber. A colorful patio overflowing with exotic flowers welcomes visitors to sit and soak in sunlight streaming between red and white umbrellas, creating a peaceful oasis for quiet reading or self-reflection. "Whoever comes here feels like it's their own," a front desk manager told LX TV's 1st Look, "Our whole goal is to take you away from whatever's out there."

The spa's international decor also mirrors its diverse menu of services, which includes acupuncture, facials, and hammam––a traditional Turkish soak that corrals plant extracts and herbs to nourish and detoxify the body. Therapists work out imbedded muscle kinks through seven varieties of massage including traditional Thai massage, which combines rhythmic kneads with yoga-like stretches and Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, which often sees practitioners using their elbows to nudge tension until it gets the hint and leaves.

The Encinitas Spa's specialty is skincare, a logical choice given the exposure bodies get in the local surfing community. To ready clients for Speedo season, certified body sugarers smooth on a low-temperature sugar formula that is less likely to yank tender tissues than conventional wax, but more capable of picking up very fine hairs without cheesy lines. Medical-grade products from PCA Skin work alone to peel away damaged cells, or in tandem with a Clarisonic Pro brush to thoroughly cleanse pores. Eight types of massage compliment these treatments, and are performed by certified holistic-health practitioners, who have honed their healing touch during at least 1,000 hours of training, and massage therapists with at least 500 hours of training. In addition to encouraging citizens to hit the beach, the team strengthens ties to the community through charitable work, recently participating in a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen foundation.
