David and Leslie Reyes first met working with exotic parrots, monkeys, and reptiles at Santa Fe College. It was 2008, and they were enrolled in the Zoo Animal Technology program in Gainesville, Florida, both exploring their passion for animals. After graduating, the new couple moved to West Palm Beach to work at a conservation facility, but they soon discovered that they had a desire to interact more closely with domestic animals and their owners. So, in 2010 they moved to Columbia to open Pets: The Whole 9 Yards with a mission to help educate pet owners and instill them with a love for their furry friends.
The Reyeses' pet shop stocks food, toys, and treats for animals ranging from dogs and cats to ferrets, birds, and lizards. Along with their compassionate staff, they also offer day care for pooches and birds, as well as grooming services for pets auditioning for shampoo commercials.
Irmo Pet Retreat caters to furry friends with private rooms and secure playing fields in a 7,300-square-foot enclave as safe and climate-controlled as each canine's own home. Eschewing traditional kennels, each suite supports man's best friends and their paws with rubber floors, cushy beds, and tempered glass walls. Each day, pampered pups take four to six escorted trips to the outdoor yard where they can run, wrestle, or dig foundations for skyscrapers to their hearts' content. Caring counselors feed pets twice a day, whether the retreat's premium dry kibble or leftovers dog owners have brought from home, and will administer medication if needed at no additional charge. The retreat keeps pets safe with 24-hour video monitoring and welcomes doggie siblings to stay in the same suite for an additional $10–$15 per day.
The staff members at Seven Oaks Animal Hospital aren’t just trained professionals—they’re pet owners themselves. Because of this, they dote on each four-legged patient as if it were their own, whether they are administering shots, grooming nails and ears, or reminiscing about the days when gentlemen wore collars. Of course, Seven Oaks is a go-to destination for more serious pet health problems as well. The hospital's veterinarians and assistants perform blood tests and ultrasounds to diagnose diseases, and if necessary they operate using patient-specific anesthesia protocols. They even run behavioral-counseling sessions for puppies and for adult dogs exhibiting abnormal tendencies.
Dr. Katie Searle, a veterinarian who has performed more than 1,500 surgeries, heads a team of creature caretakers specializing in general medicine and surgery for both large and small animals, including all breeds of dogs and cats. Located inside the Irmo Animal Supply House plaza, Palmetto Animal Health’s team tends to furry and feathered friends with services such as vaccinations and digital x-rays. While not included with this Groupon, Dr. Searle also offers in-home services for animals who prefer their leopard-print chaise lounges to an examination table.
After she studied the art of pet styling with International Professional Groomers, Inc., Kathi Johnson spent the next 20 years training, grooming, and showing canine champions on the national circuit. After amassing more ribbons than she could fit in one doghouse, she opened Blue Ribbon Pet Styling. There, Kathi continues to make pooches prim and proper, specializing in hairdos for Marquis Standard Poodles.
Animal Supply House's staff each have extensive knowledge of critter care and behavior, which they use to help pet owners optimize their furry friends' diets. As part of a local business, the staff prides itself on approachability, answering questions about how much to feed a puppy or at what age a cat should learn to read. The house brand of dog food—Apex—is specially formulated to soothe irritable stomachs and reduce shedding. Owners can also peruse pet conditioners designed to soften coats and pet toys to keep animals active. Bunnies, gerbils, and hamsters can be found around the shop, frolicking in their enclosures or quietly studying the sheet music for Don Giovanni.
