Mind and Body Acupuncture is helmed by licensed acupuncturist Amad Elia, who holds a Masters of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. Here, he uses acupuncture to help patients struggling with conditions ranging from back pain to insomnia. By inserting ultra-fine needles at specific points along the body, he aims to help restore proper flow of qi or the body's vital energy throughout the physique and stimulate the body's own natural healing abilities. During the relaxing appointments, the needle insertions are almost imperceptible, just like a massage from a ghost, and some patients have even been known to fall asleep.
Pistons player Tayshaun Prince may have a few feet on Dr. Shuyun Xu, but when it comes to treating pain and walking through doorways without ducking, she’s the star. A photo of the towering NBA player and Dr. Xu on her website shows the pair beaming after a session, speaking to the adeptness of her skills and the warmth of her personality. Both her talent and joy stem from a life spent helping others. Dr. Xu’s quest toward holistic healing began when she was 5 and started learning traditional Chinese techniques from her mother and grandmother. She went on to study at some of China’s leading universities and hospitals before importing her skills to Troy Acupuncture Center. Here, her patients reap the benefits of her learning through acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion treatments.
All three traditional Chinese practices aim to unblock chi—energy that flows through the body along channels. Through the insertion of fine acupuncture needles, pressure from cupping, or the burning of moxibustion’s signature herb, Dr. Xu frees blocked chi and helps assuage a plethora of conditions ranging from insomnia and smoking addiction to infertility and hypertension.
The clinical director Doctor of Chiropractic Tanya Dejkunchorn has treated formidable injuries while caring for professional football players and international athletes. Though her patients now rarely complain about being hit by a 350-pound lineman or being yelled at by a rude coach, Dr. Tanya always takes the time to listen to and correct the unique needs of each ailment. Along with her team of physical and massage therapists, she employs natural, noninvasive healing techniques, including acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I was looking for a way to help people feel better and get well without the need for a lot of medication. I feel there is a need for the integration of Eastern and Western medicine to give individuals a whole-body healthy life.
Out of your entire repertoire, which is your favorite service to perform and why?
Acupuncture continues to surprise me in how it helps people feel better with such tiny needles.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
The body has the amazing ability to heal itself, and acupuncture helps to boost that process.
The three sisters who run Be Well, A Creating Wellness Center built their unique wellness program on a basic philosophy: that health?or the lack thereof?is the direct result of the nurturing or neglect of three categories?the physical, the biochemical, and the psychological. Thus, using technological evaluations and the guidance of knowledgeable practitioners, staffers assess clients? health based on the strength of these three categories in their own lifestyle. They refer to the result of this evaluation as a wellness quotient?a numerical number that symbolizes the client?s position on a wellness continuum.
However, it is after this thorough assessment that the real work begins. The practitioners then curate a customized wellness program for each client based on their assessment, drawing from the center?s wide range of services. Clients may see a chiropractor for a misaligned back; they may receive nutritional counseling to help them improve their diet; they may partake in yoga, indulge in a thermal massage, enroll in fitness classes, and balance their chi through acupuncture?all in order to nurture their specific wellness deficits. And throughout the entire process, wellness coaches provide clients with support, encouragement, and constant reassessments to help them view their own progress as they return to vigor and full-body health.
Family Chiropractic Wellness Centre's Doctors of Chiropractic Jennifer Lovely and Sean Whittal met in chiropractic college, and now supplement spinal adjustments with other services such as acupuncture and exercise counseling in a newly constructed facility with comfortable surroundings. Eschewing the methods of quick-fix chiropractics, the thorough doctors advocate regular adjustments enhanced by the emerging wellness model and an arsenal of chiropractic techniques. The team also aims to prevent health issues before they start with such conscientious measures as bone-strengthening nutritional plans and prevention of slipped disks by keeping stray banana peels away from lumbar regions.
