Like most good ideas, Gymboree Play & Music didn't begin in a business meeting—it began out of necessity. In 1976, Joan Barnes, a California mom, found herself frustrated with the lack of spaces where she could take her kids for safe and age-appropriate play time. Knowing that other parents were undoubtedly feeling the same frustration, she took matters into her own hands and founded Gymboree Play & Music. She consulted experts to design a curriculum of activities to foster the development of children’s cognitive, physical, and social skills through structured play. She hired a nationally renowned playground designer Jay Beckwith to design the proprietary play equipment at her centers. And her staff began conducting entertaining classes covering subjects ranging from music to sports to impart valuable lessons of imagination and physical activity to developing minds. As their children learned and socialized, parents also found benefit in meeting and befriending other moms and dads in their local area. More than 30 years later, her vision has proved to be a success: more than 712 child-centered franchises now spread over 42 countries, bringing confidence and creativity to thousands of youngsters in several continents and to one in the center of the earth.
St. James 1st Tee Fitness & Performance guides golfers through a complete golf fitness and performance program that focuses on injury prevention and swing consistency. Titleist Performance Institute-certified fitness instructors teach the principles of mobility and stability, ideals that help a player generate swing speed while correcting bad posture or a tendency to sneeze out lunch during a backswing. The instructors begin by assessing a golfer's physical health and limitations as well as their swing style, then design a fitness program to address these issues. Golf-specific stretches and exercises focus on improving balance, endurance, and pre-tap-in ribbon dances, ultimately increasing the consistency of the swing plane and improving the ability to hit the sweet spot. Rehabilitated golfers can practice their new swings on the in-house golf simulator, which provides a respite from bad weather and the expensive greens fees associated with the real versions of famous courses, such as Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, and Bethpage Black.
When brothers Craig and Eric Haft founded Sunray Services in 1990, they envisioned an air-conditioning, heating, plumbing, and electrical contracting service that stood out from the crowd. “Our vision was to provide our customers with the highest level of service at a fair price, and back all of our products with incomparable warranties,” says Eric Haft. Today, their certified, factory-trained technicians are available around the clock to perform installation, maintenance, and repair services. All employees undergo a thorough background check to give customers peace of mind and to ensure that they are not in league with HVAC’s greatest enemy: Mother Nature.
The board-certified physicians at The Center for Medical Weight Loss draft up holistic, nonsurgical weight-loss plans, offering dietary and fitness guidance while helping patients overcome behavioral blocks that inhibit slimming down. Consultations last approximately 30 minutes and begin with a thorough review of medical histories. Clients then hop on an advanced scale that calculates bodily levels of fat, muscle, heroism, and water before machines glean resting metabolism rate and blood pressure. Based on these data and an in-depth conversation about fitness goals, physicians prescribe a weight-loss plan covering diet and exercise that accounts for any emotional, mental, and physical barriers that interfere with pound shedding. Physicians discuss strategies to help clients overcome factors such as stress-related eating patterns and hauntings by ghostly bacon strips. After consultations, patients receive vitamin B12 and fat-burning injections that help jump-start fitness quests. Check the clinic's weight-loss-prediction calculator for an estimate of program results and the current weights of celebrities.
The photographers at Time and Moment aim to celebrate each client's personality in every shot, creating expressive and artful photos. Equally at ease with taking striking creative approaches or framing more traditional photos, the staffers at Time and Moment take into account clients' ideas and collaborate with them to find the most unique approach for each photo.
Michelle Zuccaro interned at Teen Vogue and for the iconic Annie Leibovitz, but she'd rather capture the glimmer of a child's smile than the glare of the red carpet. For 10 years before she took up the study of fine-art photography at St. John's University, she volunteered to work with children ranging from 6 months to 7 years of age at a vacation Bible school. During those years, she developed a keen sensitivity to children's moods—"I wanted to be a teacher before I discovered photography," she says. With her professional photography career now in full throttle, she specializes in portraits of children, but also snaps holiday-themed family photos and flattering headshots for upcoming auditions for Wheaties commercials.
