Spanning 140 feet and welcoming up to 424 shipmates, the Spirit of Ethan Allen III stages public and private cruises along Lake Champlain's shoreline in prime view of the Adirondack and Green Mountain ranges. Furnished with heating and air conditioning, each of the ship's three decks seat guests for an array of occasions, including luncheon cabaret shows, brunches, dance parties, and murder-mystery dinners all fueled by the ship's executive chef. The captains disclose historical tidbits and folklore during daily narrated scenic cruises and remain quiet during nightly sunset cruises to let guests groove to background music, sip on spirited beverages, and fill out long-overdue tax forms.

He's out there somewhere—the notorious Pirate Pete. Over every sailor's adventure, the shadow of his greed looms. But the crew of Pirate Adventures is ready. On their 50-foot ship, 12 water cannons point toward the sea, guarding the vessel from his villainy while they search Davy Jones's locker for sunken treasure. If Pete should show his face, he'll get a face full of water. If he should happen to board anyway, it'll be the plank for him.

During Pirate Adventures' 75-minute treasure hunts, children and their parents sail into this exciting world of high-seas adventure. Crew members welcome aboard new mateys with face-paint, pirate garb, and a sea-worthy moniker, such as "Black Beard' or "Esmerelda, Princess of the Dolphins." Beneath the Jolly Roger flapping in the breeze, the crews decipher maps, solve puzzles, and sing sea shanties, eventually fishing their sought-after treasure chest from the water's depths. Throughout the hunt, the Pirate Adventures crew keeps their unpatched eyes on safety. Everything is kept up to Transport Canada's code: they have all trained in marine emergency procedures, marine first aid, and safe vessel operation.

Q&A with the Owner

Do you or your staff have any special certifications or degrees?

All of our sail-training staff?including the director of operations?are experienced sailors. Along with a passion for sailing, they are nationally certified and can provide training for Sail Canada certification.

What's one tip for first-time customers that will make them feel like regulars?

No prior sailing experience is required. Just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn all that the sailing lifestyle has to offer.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

My passion for sailing started when my parents enrolled me in sailing camp at age nine. After being involved with all aspects of sailing for twenty years, both on the race course and exploring different sailing destinations, I decided to turn my passion for sailing into a business. Now I help others discover how much fun sailing can be.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Sailing isn't just for the rich and famous. In fact, the vast majority of sailors lie on the other side of the spectrum. Sailing can complement any budget, and you can even enjoy it without owning your own boat. Also, there aren't many activities that you can pursue from age 5 to 80?but sailing is one of them. It's also an activity that you can share with friends and family while making memories to last a lifetime. That's why many sailors say that "a bad day on the water sailing still beats a good day at the office."
