After a decade getting her hands dirty with clay, artist Donna Schreiter swung open the doors of The Painted Pot in 2001, determined to bring the art of ceramic creation to all ages and skill levels. Inside the open studio, adults, kids, and families dabble raw bisques with glaze-soaked sponges, assemble mosaic works, and shape wet clay on spinning wheels. Kids' classes guide little hands to shape and paint their own pieces, and grown-ups-only evenings throw in margaritas for sipping and instructions for weaving baskets out of old utilities bills.
In August of 2009, the five women who founded the St. Chux Derby Chix found themselves on the wrong side of the Missouri river. In search of a local roller derby league to join—but unwilling to drive or quantum leap over to St. Louis—the women decided to start their own league. Through word-of-mouth, the news spread quickly, and soon, female competitors from across the county were signing up. By December, the St. Chux Derby Chix were born. From young professionals and college students to moms with college-aged kids of their own, the Derby Chix roster steadily grew. So much so that they now have enough players to field two teams: the Pack in Black and Helles Belles. Both clubs compete at Matteson Square Garden, where fans of all ages are invited to kick back and watch the fast-paced action.
From the moment students walk through Barefoot Yoga Studio's french doors and into its expansive practice space, they find themselves immersed in serenity owed to soft lighting, gleaming hardwood floors, and the noncompetitive attitude fostered by owner Jenn Kasper. Along with her team of fellow certified yoga instructors, Jenn leads inclusive yoga classes suitable for all experience levels and grounded in the Vinyasa and hatha yoga traditions. Beginners are encouraged to build a solid foundation for practice in Level 1 root classes or further their practice at their own pace in open-level classes that offer variations on classic poses. Savvier stretchers attempt challenging backbends and arm balances in intermediate Level 2 classes.
In addition to yoga, Barefoot also offers instruction in American Tribal Style belly dance. Offered in six-week sessions, the classes lead dancers through the belly-swaying basics, including lessons on posture, group maneuvers, and where to find office-appropriate crop tops.
