When his father suffered a heart attack, presumably brought on by years of smoking, drinking, and eating junk food, Luke knew he had to “be the change.” So, at the age of 17, he embarked on a fitness quest for the first time in his life, eventually losing 50 pounds and gaining a new outlook on life. Today, Luke has become Dr. Luke, and he runs his own fitness and health centre, ReveLUKEtion Boot Camp. Whether through personal training or group classes, Luke guides each of his clients through their weight-loss and fitness goals. Not only does he motivate them through strength and cardio exercises four times a week at boot-camp sessions, but he also fortifies training with helpful diet and nutrition tips, such as filling up on vegetables and eating cake only on your birthday so the calories don’t count. Dr. Luke’s successful work with clients has also landed him various local-television appearances, where has spoken as an expert on childhood obesity and divulged workout tips and tricks.

Access MMA Training Centre Ltd.'s facilities are simple, almost spartan. The white-walled rooms house a boxing ring, free weights, mats, and punching bags?everything the coaches need to teach their students proper fighting and fitness techniques. An official amateur MMA club under the regulation of Kickboxing Canada, Access MMA Training Centre Ltd. prepares fighters for professional careers. Boxing coaches include two provincial silver medalists and a Soviet Union national medalist. They blend Russian technique with North American and European methods while focusing on defense, footwork, and making distracting funny faces. The coaches bring this same tenacity and professionalism into fitness classes for lay people. Students lace up their gloves for both contact and noncontact classes. And, during personal-training sessions, trainers enlist boxing moves?such as bobbing and weaving or asking nicely if the opponent could replace punches with hugs?to build muscle definition and shed excess weight.

Brian, the owner of Capital City Fitness Club, has been lifting since the latter days of his high-school career. He started weight training as a hobby, but it quickly became a passion for him. He sought education as a personal trainer, not only to share his insight with others, but so he could have a career that allowed him to regularly lift. Brian likes to give his clients his undivided attention as he trains. That's why he only accepts personal-training clients in his 2,000 square-foot facility. There are plenty of gyms for public fitness, but in his studio, Brian makes sure it's all about his client's goals. He even assembled a collection of very specific pieces of equipment to get the job done, from ubiquitously recognizable dumbbells to more esoteric machines such as the recumbent bike, on which you recline, pedal very hard, and never move an inch.
