At The Healthy Living & Gluten Free Expo, dozens of gluten-free vendors and wellness consultants share their insights on the benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle?especially for those who suffer from celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and other auto-immune disorders. Visitors can peruse the offerings of businesses such as Gluten Free Nana and Legit Pizza, or glean knowledge from speakers on topics such as how a gluten-free diet can help prevent cancer. Cooking demonstrations are also a big part of the expo, showing crowds how to whip up gourmet gluten-free meals.
West Fest 2011, an outdoor music festival nestled in Wallace Marine Park, entertains concertgoers with a brimming lineup of classic and contemporary rock performers. Headlining musician Chuck Prophet—known for recording alongside Warren Zevon, sharing stage space with Lucinda Williams, and living up to his last name by predicting future events—takes the stage at 8 p.m. with his band The Mission Express. Session guitarist Jeff Pevar from David Crosby side-project CPR opens the night at 6:30 p.m. with a solo performance and three-handed ventriloquist-dummy quartet.

When your berries and pies are sold all around the country, you need to have a lot of them. And indeed, Willamette Valley Pie Company's team handles 20 million pounds of fruit every summer and makes 2,400 pies during each eight-hour shift at the bakery. Its berries?all of which are individually quick-frozen so they won't stick together?also go into yogurt, muffins, ice cream, and smoothies.
At its core, however, the company is local and family-owned. That's why it opened its Farm Store in 2009, creating a place where visitors could order freshly baked pies, tour the facilities, and even pick their own berries from the fields. The store also hosts an annual Pie and Harvest Festival in October. There, guests partake in classic autumnal activities, from exploring mazes to going on speed-dates with pumpkins to find their perfect match.
For nearly two decades, three-day festival The Bite & Brew of Salem has celebrated Northwest American summer through beers, food, and outdoor entertainment. Held on the grassy lawns of Riverfront Park, the annual event combines family-friendly entertainment with performances by 15 local and national bands on two outdoor stages. Meanwhile, local breweries such as Salem Ale Works, Hop Valley Brewing Co., and Gilgamesh Brewing pour more than 60 draft beers, including a few hard-to-find concoctions. To complement the suds, a plethora of Oregon food carts and restaurants serve sweet and savory fare under the blazing July sun.
Formerly the Oregon Wine, Food & Brew Fest, 2015's First Taste Oregon will showcase the same types of Oregon talent: winemakers, brewers, distillers, and chefs. On Friday, January 23, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday, January 24, from noon to 10 p.m., a fresh lineup of vendors will flood the Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center's Columbia Hall with their pours, suds, and cuisine. Though the final list of exhibitors remains a mystery, participants have included Eastside Distilling?which led a special tasting of its bourbon, vodka, and coffee rum, among others?and demos by several Oregon chefs. Visitors can park in the free lot, and purchase some taste tickets to enjoy similar activities this year.
