When and how did you first realize you wanted to be involved in hair styling?
When I was a teenager I loved playing with everyones hair. My aunt owned a salon, so I knew I wanted to have my own one day. And now I have hers.
What's the biggest mistake you see clients make when they style their hair at home?
They are not taking care of their hair and color by not using professional shampoo and styling products.
For many people, a trip to the salon is a way to enjoy some "me time." What supplemental courtesies do you offer to make guests feel relaxed?
It's a comfortable, mellow environment.
With gentle hands and focus, Heather beautifies and clarifies skin with facials using products not tested on animals. It's all in a day's work for the aesthetician, who doesn't just do facials but also waxes unruly hair, performs, microdermabrasion treatments, and applies makeup. Esthetics by Heather is part of the family-run Big J’s Bikes & Pain, an eclectic venture that specializes in aesthetics, motorcycles, and tattoos.
You won't hear percussive snaps and pops coming out of the treatment rooms at Vitality: A Creating Wellness Center. That's because Doctor of Chiropractic Jeff Mitchell doesn't crack spines; he specializes in gentle adjustments that use vibration to release locked-up vertebrae. The computerized Pro-Adjuster system knows precisely how much vibration to dole out and for how long. Dr. Mitchell uses these treatments to ease his clients' chronic headaches and help them lead pain-free lives.
Lips, eyes, eyebrows, and skin—those are the living canvases on which Lisa Wilson practices her aesthetic arts. As a permanent makeup artist, Lisa draws on more than 25 years in the beauty industry to transform such features with permanent makeup, facials, and waxing. In addition to wielding cosmetics and wax, she clips manes into trendy cuts or classic styles that are innocuous enough for time traveling. Whether she’s tinting lashes or shading lips to rosy hues, she approaches each appointment with a positivity and sensitivity that helps her clients leave looking and feeling their best.
The trio of owners behind Pamper Me Massage & Day Spa each contribute something unique to their business: Gary Lindquist is the financial backer, Daniel Lindquist is the promoter and go-to guy, and Eva Fleck is the face of the company. Their team of skilled specialists comes in three parts as well, much like a short fantasy novel adapted into an extremely long film series. Their nail tech pampers hands and feet with mani-pedis, acrylic nails, and hand-painted nail art. The aesthetician purifies pores with facials, body wraps, and sauna sessions, and tints exteriors with airbrush tanning and prune unwanted fuzz with wax. For full-on relaxation, the massage therapist plies bodies with techniques such as Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point, hot stone, and prenatal.
