Though ?White Water" Willy has devoted half a century to plumbing Oregon?s waters for salmon and sturgeon, he still recalls the joy of landing his first catch at age 3. Since then, the inveterate angler has hauled in 12-foot sturgeon, produced fishing programs, and even invented his own salmon lures for companies like Lure Jensen, but his true passion lies in introducing new generations of anglers to the thrill of the first tug. To that end, Willy and his staff of licensed and insured guides provide fledgling fishermen and women not only with the gear and tackle they?ll need to attract fish and repel submarine captains, but also patient instruction in proper technique. Once anglers have reeled in their catch, guides can arrange for packaging, shipping, or taxidermy services.

Gift certificates are also available through the A Better Catch Guide Service's website.

You won't find cars in strength and conditioning specialist Michael Howell's garage. Instead, you'll find weights, barbells, and other pieces of non-drivable fitness machinery that comprise his sport-specific home fitness studio, Dynamic Fitness & Performance. Here, he leads performance training sessions that aim to put athletes at the top of their game; baseball players build speed, MMA fighters gain endurance, and triathletes hone their longevity. All workouts include a 21-point functional movement screen. He also brings his programs on the road during outdoor boot camps at a local high school.

Built on a former dairy farm in 1969, the executive course at Meadowlawn incorporates a compact game of nine holes into residential Arcadia. Four par 3 holes help players develop their short game amid hazards such as a creek, lake, and sand bunkers newly renovated with tiny camels and to-scale mirages. The course also features five par 4s for diverse play while still maintaining a scaled-down layout that ensures a quick round, allowing players to get in enough play. After rounds, the onsite Upper Deck Grill refuels and rejuvenates golfers with a menu of salads, sandwiches, and grill fare.

Formerly the Oregon Wine, Food & Brew Fest, 2015's First Taste Oregon will showcase the same types of Oregon talent: winemakers, brewers, distillers, and chefs. On Friday, January 23, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday, January 24, from noon to 10 p.m., a fresh lineup of vendors will flood the Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center's Columbia Hall with their pours, suds, and cuisine. Though the final list of exhibitors remains a mystery, participants have included Eastside Distilling?which led a special tasting of its bourbon, vodka, and coffee rum, among others?and demos by several Oregon chefs. Visitors can park in the free lot, and purchase some taste tickets to enjoy similar activities this year.
