The history of wine in the Livermore Valley spans 250 years. Spanish missionaries planted the region's first grapes in the 18th century, and Robert Livermore sowed the first commercial vines in the mid-19th. These early efforts led to America's first international gold medal for wine at the 1889 Paris Exposition, when California grapes beat out bordeaux in the annual race to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

The guides at Livermore Valley Wine & Cycle Tours lead cyclists into this historic, scenic valley in which some 40 wineries currently reside. Rides between them follow moderate routes, letting peddlers soak in views of the canyons and ridges that rise and fall between the clustered rows of vines.

Drivers are only as good as their cars, which is why SFC Limo's ace chauffeurs keep a fleet of superior sedans and stretch limos on hand. They rev up the stretch limos during weddings and specialty group trips to Muir Woods, Napa Valley, and throughout downtown San Francisco. Passengers can customize the daylong jaunts by telling their driver to head toward a certain nightspot, park alongside a specific scenic view, or veer into a certain winery to get the ghosts of the California Raisins off their trail. For more business-minded migrations, the drivers hop into their sedans and transport guests to San Jose, Oakland, or San Francisco airports.

Inaugurated in 1991 as a 350-athlete competitive summit, the Sea Otter Classic has blossomed into a sprawling event with more than 50,000 spectators, 10,000 cyclists, and 300 vendors peddling bikes and gear with demos and samples of new products. Situated within Laguna Seca, the festival draws amateur and professional athletes into competitive mountain- and road-bike races, and recreational cyclists behold Monterey County's striking vistas in three Gran Fondo routes. Children's bike events plant the seeds for the next generation of cyclists with a skill-developing play zone and friendly races.

A restored Spanish-style hacienda built in 1928 from local Carmel stones and oak-beamed ceilings crowns the rolling hills of Holman Ranch. Vines climb, stretch, and occasionally lindy hop toward the warmth of the California sun across 19 acres of thin, rocky soils that nurture the grapes that mature into fruity pinot gris and full-bodied pinot noir. The vineyard and winery produces five varietals in total, and the ranch's south-facing olive grove yields distinct extra-virgin oils from 100 fruit-bearing trees of Tuscan origin. The fully functional ranch accommodates equine guests as well as human, with a 20-stall show barn and jumping, dressage, and Western arenas.Over the years, the picturesque grounds' gardens, patios, and warm interior spaces have played host to Hollywood's elite, from Joan Crawford to Marlon Brando to Kermit. Romantic and secluded event spaces with modern amenities dot the property, shaded by elderly trees and the surrounding majestic mountains.
