When an Allure magazine staffer received a haircut from Madison Thomas, Madison hinted that the staffer's blunt-cut bob wasn't all that flattering. So Madison created some layers to bring out the staffer's natural wavy texture and shortened pieces around her face to emphasize her cheekbones. The staffer was thrilled with the result and praised the stylist "brave enough to dole out tough love."

Madison honed her sharp eye working in the beauty industry for 20 years. She mastered many of her skills abroad at the Toni & Guy training center in Milan and learned how to design hair for photo shoots in London. She now plies her trade at BYB at Salon Amenity (short for "be your best"). In addition to creating flattering cuts and painting strands with ammonia-free color, Madison—who is also a trained aesthetician—fights acne and wrinkles with relaxing Bioelements facials. She also performs oxygen-infusion treatments, which uses a machine to pump oxygen into skin and encourage cellular renewal.

Kursten Skelley styled her first coiffure at four years old when she taught herself to braid her Barbie's hair. Her penchant for artistic expression overflowed into painting and writing and was likely inspired by her mom, who was a hairstylist. Even so, pursuing a career in beauty wasn't really on her radar at first, so she entered the adult world by opening a coffee shop. This would have been the end of her story if Kursten hadn't decided to go to cosmetology school. After returning to her first love, she went on to found K. Styles and hone her skills on fashion shows and photo shoots. No matter what style she concocts, she sees beauty in everything from vintage and hip-hop fashion to avant-garde looks, such as creating a beehive hairdo with an actual beehive.

Klein Massage & Day Spa’s service menu is relatively succinct, but what the center does, it does well—it was nominated for Best of Citysearch in 2010 for tanning and in 2009 for couples massage. Aside from massage, Klein’s body treatments include stretch therapy, designed to help athletes prevent injury and boost performance. But the services are mostly about looking your best. Aestheticians clear skin with facials and microdermabrasion, and other staff members perform beauty treatments such as sunless tanning and lash tinting so that clients will look even more striking than if they covered two-thirds of their bodies in lipstick.

The customized facial package at Dermavita is a skin-rejuvenating treatment completely tailored to each individual face. After an initial personal skin evaluation, the aesthetician will determine the most appropriate combination of facial treatments for each client. The 60-minute facial may include a specialized sequence of microdermabrasion, which polishes away blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles, and tarnish; deep pore cleansing to unpack pores' oversized purses of makeup residue, dead skin, and cookie crumbs; and a vitamin-and-collagen therapy to stimulate the living skin beneath the surface. Other treatment possibilities include an enzyme exfoliation, which removes rough, dry skin and softens the face, as well as a light chemical peel to restore your youthful appearance. A hydrating treatment locks in moisture, keeping skin soft, pliable, and luminous enough to help you read Proust in the dark, as the author intended. No matter which combination your skin requires, the customized facial aims to improve the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin, softening lines, stimulating collagen, and treating skin damage.
