The green-thumbed technicians at Gardens by Marsetti cultivate lush, thick lawns with aeration and fertilization services. Clients consult with lawn specialists to describe their yard-related goals, such as achieving grass that's as comfortable to bare feet as socks made of wookie fur. Technicians thoroughly aerate grassy areas, removing plugs of soil to allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to enter the ground and nourish roots. After aerating lawns, technicians determine how much fertilizer is appropriate to foster grass health before feeding eager turf.
For more than three decades, ABC Tree Farms have provided the Bay Area with seasonal fun October through December. Summer inspires the first round of recreation in the form of Summer Fun Zones packed with inflatable bounce houses masquerading as castles and slides and fresh harvests of local cherries, peaches, melons, and other fruits. During October, they run 20 pumpkin-themed locations, some of which also feature inflatable bounce houses and other attractions. Once Thanksgiving passes, groves of Christmas trees spring up, having made their way south from Oregon and Washington. There they will stand until Christmas Eve, hoping to decorate homes or become the model that inspires a revamped line of evergreen air fresheners.
While other graduate students buried their noses in musty library books, Laura Hanson and Diana Benner muddied their knees in the wetlands and eelgrass habitats around San Francisco. Their research led to their respective degrees—MS in ecology and systematics, MS in environmental science—as well as a deep understanding of the inner workings of California’s ecological systems. The pair opened The Watershed Nursery with the aim of helping those ecosystems flourish.
Together with a team of botanical specialists, Laura and Diana oversee habitat restoration and enhancement projects. They specialize in growing native and site-specific California plants, as well as drought-tolerant species that thrive on the sustenance found in sunlight and loving glances. In addition to ready-to-plant items, the nursery can grow site-specific plants for a difficult area or create custom seed selections, among other services.
To further The Watershed Nursery’s mission of “habitat enhancement,” team members participate in environmentally responsible projects within the community, such as the restoration of Breuner Marsh and mitigation projects in Sycamore Grove and Portola Park. Staff members also aid the Earth in everyday practices, as they collect used plant containers from customers for additional uses and second careers as eco-friendly badminton birdies.
For more than two decades, the husband-and-wife team behind Jane’s Roses, Flowers and Events has equipped patrons with decorative arrangements for wedding days, formal occasions, and everyday happenings. The two weave together elegant blooms with complementary leaves, ferns, and wispy foliage, crafting beautiful bouquets and artfully filled vases for loved ones. They also design custom arrangements for special occasions, bedecking halls with freshly plucked blossoms laid into aisle-lining strands or arranged into stylish centerpieces.
Should flowers not suit someone’s tastes, the shop loads fruit, snacks, and chocolate into homey wicker gift baskets, which can be picked up or delivered straight to recipients’ doors. Each delivery comes with additional add-ons such as mylar balloons, Ferrero Rocher chocolates, and a photo confirmation, which lets senders experience first-hand the surprise, joy, or leftover milk mustaches on recipients’ faces.
The friendly family of florists at Abigail?s Flowers doles out festive foliage for any occasion. From proms and weddings to "get wells" and birthdays, Abigail?s arranges bouquets primed to please recipients and proximal bumblebees. Arrangements are organized by price range, and all showcase bright flora such as roses, sunflowers, white lilies, and blue hydrangea. Abigail?s also offers specialty services such as gifts, plants, dried floral arrangements, and local delivery.
Gourds. Cinnamon sticks. Chili peppers. They're not the elements of a traditional floral arrangement, but Andrei and Lisa Krylov like to surprise their clients. After 15 years, the husband-wife team behind Not Just Flowers have become experts in the unconventional. The staff designs flora creations for their clients' friends, office mates, or dinner party hosts. In addition to building traditional bouquets, the shop specializes in sophisticated arrangements of orchids and succulents.
The Krylovs add a distinctly European sensibility to their local materials—Andrei grew up in a field of Russian wildflowers, Lisa in England. Indeed, their clay-red storefront in the Castro wouldn't look out of place on the cobblestone street of an old European city, with the day's freshest blossoms crowding the door and spilling out onto the sidewalk. Some of their most striking work is done offsite, however. Having won two Bride's Choice awards from WeddingWire, the Krylovs specialize in towering arrangements for weddings and other big events.
**Groupon Celebrates Pride Month** Over the last 50 years, the gay-rights movement in America has overcome tremendous obstacles to become a powerful voice for inclusion and diversity. Even as it has grown, the movement—like Groupon—is local at heart, and we applaud the commitment to real change that improves everyday lives. At Groupon, we are happy to add our voices to those celebrating PRIDE, their achievements as a social movement and a continued march to equality for the LGBT community. Plus, we love a chance to dig that rainbow wig out of storage. This month—and throughout the year—we salute our merchants and customers who support PRIDE and all efforts that promote dignity, respect, and equal opportunity. We're highlighting these merchants' deals with a special badge to show Groupon's pride in working with people who share our values.
