Otra Vez stocks designer looks from the last two years as well as classic and vintage styles in near-mint condition. After sending their original price tags through a paper shredder, items from such labels as Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton can slip into witness protection in the humble closets of Otra Vez's style-savvy patrons. Since items are individual at Otra Vez, Cinderella fantasies meet reality when rightly-sized feet slide into the leather workmanship of Cole Haan sandals ($49.99). Explore the world from a vantage point a few inches higher up in a pair of Manolo Blahnicks ($96), or from a more colorful state of dress in a vibrant Simon Chang blouse ($35.49). High science meets high fashion when 1960s dresses, such as a green gown from Saz Boutique ($119), prove that cryogenics work for fine fabrics.
Like archeologists unearthing buried treasures, the stylists of Montage Vintage hunt for fashionable attire from yesteryear and offer it to a new generation in search of fun styles. Dresses, shirts, and pants are lovingly salvaged and restored to their former glory through dyeing, spot treating, tailoring, and embellishing. Jewelry shattered by neglect, time, or falling into a molten lava cake is reformed into new pieces, incorporating leather, natural stones, and other materials. The staff has a passion for bringing past fashions to today's streets, but only items that pass a delicate series of checks make it to the Montage shelves, and only after being professionally cleaned with the garment's care tag guidelines.
Together, Redbone's instructors have more than 6,435 years of instruction experience; that's more than six lifetimes rocking, jamming, making splendid sounds, and busting blistering solos. Cliff Wright teaches guitar along with Greg Norris, who played on the Grammy-nominated album World Jazz by Lara & Reyes and conducts jazz clinics and master classes at many San Antonio–area high schools. Brazilian-born piano savant Nayara Megarity teaches scales, octaves, and chords, specializing in music's empathic intensity.
As the Spanish translation of Raices de Arte Espanol attests, owners Carmen and Jose Linares each have strong roots in the arts. Born in Spain, Jose began playing guitar professionally at 12 years old, traveling the world to perform for icons such as President John F. Kennedy and Princess Grace of Monaco. Dancing by age 3, Puerto Rican–born Carmen trained in New York with the American Ballet Theatre, toured with the ballet companies of Philadelphia and San Juan, and began teaching flamenco in San Antonio in the 1970s. Today, the couple shares the art of flamenco with others at their studio, where students apply their own expressive twists to footwork and even wield castanets to clack out rhythms or Morse-code messages to one another as they dance.
