To call The Body Shop a mere skin and body care store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as "Defend Human Rights" and "Protect The Planet." She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while ultimately expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in over 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, “She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.”
Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an eco-friendliness and social consciousness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to an EU-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screenprinted by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments such as the brand’s iconic body butters, facial products, and gift collections often appear in Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, Seventeen and other national publications.
ith more than 175 locations nationwide and more than 35 years in the business, Car-X Auto Service has earned a prime spot in the parking garage of quality car care and customer service. Started in 1971 by a team of seasoned muffler-shop owners, the service centers have blossomed from their beginnings as specialty exhaust shops to providers of nearly any repair or maintenance service imaginable, from installing performance-enhancing accessories to treating cars to therapeutic trust falls. In addition to promoting safety and long, healthy engine life with brake services and speedy oil changes, Car-X Auto Service reaches out to the surrounding community with regular philanthropic activities, such as recycling drives and participation in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk.
Since its inception more than 30 years ago, Just Brakes has expanded from one auto shop to more than 160 outposts across eight states. At every location, ASE-certified technicians maintain vehicle safety with professional brake services including a lifetime warranty on parts, labor and platonic love. Though their specialty is brakes, the techs also perform routine maintenance and repairs such as oil changes, suspension repair, and belt replacement.
At The Oil Exchange, auto owners stay in the driver's seat, sipping complimentary soda or water as technicians fill the engine with synthetic-blend oil. The drive-thru service center's technicians never act without full consent. They keep auto owners informed with education skits written by middle school teachers as they carry out state inspections or oil, transmission, and radiator services.
At Mobil 1 Lube Express, a troop of trained technicians replaces old oil with up to 5 quarts of new fluid, screwing in a brand-new filter to match. Then, they'll put on their safety caps and perform an inspection—which includes checking fluids, lights, belts, and tires—before turning steering wheels left and asking tailpipes to cough twice. Cleaners equipped with smudge-eradicating suds and dust-hungry vacuums move in next, targeting grime and fingerprint mosaics with a full-service wash and hand dry, vacuuming interiors, and applying Rain-X and triple-foam protectants for extra defense against the elements. An application of rust inhibitor protects metallic veneers from corrosion, and a coating of Bugg Off affords rides a layer of defense against clingy insects and children wearing trendy magnetic vests. Specialists will also blast away crud from carriage underbellies and decorate wheels and tires with sprays of Wheel Brite and a tire shine.
