Students of all skill and experience levels flock to the tranquil Alamo Heights studio to stretch, sweat, and strengthen together under the influence of highly-skilled teachers. Studio A: Pilates offers low-impact core-conditioning classes in the Fletcher style of Pilates to help workouteers reach healthy fitness levels, tone and lengthen their muscles, increase their flexibility, and twist away their tension. During the four-week introductory series, students learn the fundamentals of Fletcher alignment techniques, Percussive Breathing™, basic mat work, and Fletcher Towelwork®, with each class introducing new challenging moves to keep workouts fresh and fun. Class sizes are kept small to ensure that all students—even middle children wearing hand-me-down capris—receive individualized attention.
Upon visiting AC Power Yoga, a guest might find that it’s an ideal space for an Orwellian protagonist in that it strips the world of distraction so that yoga practitioners can get down to focusing on self-discovery. The studio’s instructors encourage students to turn away from smartphones, tablets, and televisions so that they may concentrate on their own thought process. Their yoga styles range from high impact Baptiste Power Vinyasa to Yin yoga––a style that helps participants stretch deeply and heal. Classes take place in an 80–90-degree studio, which also promotes detoxification and flexibility.
For more than three decades, locally owned Spectrum Athletic Clubs have aimed to create a resort-like experience for patrons with upscale perks and personalized care. After workouts, gym-goers can avail themselves of unlimited towel service and change in comfortable locker rooms. Other amenities include saunas, steam rooms, healthy cafes, specialized workout areas, and complimentary Internet access.
In addition, racquetball courts let athletes improve their game independently, and patrons can sweat solo on cardiovascular equipment with individual viewing screens. Group classes, more than 1,200 of which are held daily, include Zumba, Pilates, Body Combat, and CXWorx sessions and enable trainees to draw motivation from each other or from each exercise studio's complimentary tank of moxie. The Spectrum Kids Club gives kids a place to play while adults work out and hosts such events as pool parties and pizza parties throughout the year.
The crew at The District regularly reroute the holds on its climbing walls to keep clients guessing. While music pumps through the gym’s speakers, visitors can try out slacklining—or walking across a wide nylon webbing suspended between two points—and strengthen their arms on punching bags and gymnast rings. The space is open 24 hours a day to fit any schedule and accommodate sleepwalkers.
