Horses graze on the hillsides of the 200-acre valley at Shamrock Ranch, and tail-wagging guests enjoy the coastal breeze during long leash walks. Led by trainer Lisa Nava Rhodes, the Shamrock Ranch team cares for pets while practicing training methods that encourage healthy relationships with owners. The team also hosts overnight stays in their climate-controlled kennels or kitty condos, feeding pets with owner-provided food or Shamrock Ranch's own hypoallergenic treats. Top Performance oatmeal shampoo revives coats during grooming services, and dogs can enjoy brush outs and nail trimmings after getting bathed and listening to gossip about neighborhood squirrels.
Run by Stanford University's coaches' education trainer Mike Legarza and boasting a camper return rate of 90%, Legarza Basketball Camp develops young dribblers in a structured environment of positive support and fundamental basketball instruction, valuing hard work and effort. Morning camps focus on shooting and ball handling, as orb-bouncers will learn the basics of scoring and protecting the basketball. Players will be divided into teams for the week and play one game per day with a tournament at the end of the week. Afternoon camps concentrate on gameplay, as youngsters will be introduced to gamesmanship and strategy, such as when to feed the ball to the 7-footer in the post and when to feed the ball to the siberian tiger spotting up for a three-pointer.
When Joan Barnes founded Gymboree Play & Music in 1976, she envisioned a facility where parents and children could play together in a safe and age-appropriate environment. In the following decades, Gymboree Play & Music spread to more than 30 countries across the globe, helping youngsters from infants to 5 years old develop cognitive, physical, and social skills. The company's instructors lead classes such as Play & Learn, its flagship course, in which parents and kids move through a seven-level program filled with storytelling, play activities, and debates on the merits of sandwich crust. Talented staffers also prep youngsters for school and foster development in areas such as music, art, and sports. Throughout all classes, they make use of custom play equipment designed by acclaimed playground designer and seesaw-tamer Jay Beck.
In spite of hills that can make cycling treacherous and stick-shifts a challenge, the allure of riding a motorcycle tugs strongly in San Francisco. The private classes at Monkey Moto School in the Haight have enabled many a buttoned-down soul to ditch the minivan for an M1 license and something with a little more flash. In addition to providing invaluable advice when purchasing a motorcycle, Monkey Moto will teach novices to ride with confidence, skill and safety. Down-shifting in inclement weather is an important skill, but who hasn’t dreamt of lane-splitting on the Golden Gate Bridge, or letting the waves crash nearby as you cruise along the coast, with the wind blowing past?
The Little Gym of Belmont ensconces children in a nurturing, noncompetitive environment conducive to building kid confidence with fitness-focused activities. Youngsters can participate in a jellybean jar of professionally developed classes (a $19.75 value per class) such as gymnastics, dance, karate, and sports skills. Each session is geared toward improving the attention spans, mind and body balance, and motor skills of babbling tots ranging from 10-month-olds to middle-school sages of 12 years. Classes last 45–60 minutes, lavishing small fries in movement, music, learning, and laughter, leaving little darlings with no time to bite the instructor's ankles or write a scathing opinion letter to the New York Times about child ennui. Check out the schedule for a full listing of class times.
