The year 1986 was a health- and fitness-focused one. Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight boxing champion in history, smoking was banned on all forms of public transportation, and Being-Fit opened its doors. The gym sought to supply its members with everything they needed to reach their personal fitness goals. Though its equipment has been overhauled, Being-Fit’s mission hasn't changed in the intervening two decades.
Today, the gym's trainers host more than 30 varieties of group fitness classes, including yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, and Zumba. When not in class, students can take advantage of the cardio theater, where favorite shows and video clips of kittens wiping out on treadmills play constantly as people jog in place. Additionally, the gym’s personal trainers construct individualized workouts during one-on-one sessions, equipping members with repeatable exercises crafted to address personal fitness goals.
During classes at Bikram Yoga Mira Mesa, visitors step into a studio whose thermostat rests at a steady 105 degrees fahrenheit. A defining trait of Bikram yoga, the high temperatures help to warm muscles, prevent injuries and strains, and minimize polar bear attendance in class. Each session flows through a series of 26 poses, ordered carefully to stretch and strengthen different muscles.
ZFitness Classes & Apparel helms a range of fitness programs for women. Leading the charge are a team of upbeat instructors who draw from specialties and certifications in Zumba, Flirty Girl Fitness, and R.I.P.P.E.D., among other fitness styles. Every Monday through Saturday, the studio's sprawling open floor plan welcomes large classes where participants sweat through workouts designed to help them have fun while getting in shape. Zumba and Zumba Sentao lessons lead participants in calorie-burning dance routines set to energetic Latin music, while the Bokwa workout challenges them to draw letters and numbers with their feet until they've transcribed Shakespeare's entire oeuvre. Alternatively, instructors conduct high-intensity interval training during R.I.P.P.E.D. classes.
Started and inspired by Sean O’Shea and his passion for empowering students through yoga, Four Seasons Yoga carried on his legacy after his passing in 2006 under the watchful eyes of husband and wife duo James and Jenny Bouwer. Endowed with a passion for yoga and a desire to honor Sean’s memory, James and Jenny created an impassioned community of dedicated yogis to practice and relax together.
Now the studio teems with activity with multiple classes a day ranging in difficulty from foundation-building True Beginner classes to more challenging Ashtanga Vinyasa, which combines a swift Vinyasa flow that links breath to movement and strength-building postures. Lunchtime yoga sessions are offered daily Monday–Friday, and gentle Hatha yoga, a style of yoga that involves slow-paced stretching with some simple breathing exercises, is also available. The expert instructors also lead different workshops designed to deepen practice.
Certified instructor Judy Simons understands that when it comes to Pilates?and exercise in general?there isn't a one-size-fits-all routine. So at Pilates Fusion, she offers options to help each student craft a fitness plan to reach their goals, whether that be losing weight or achieving six-pack abs without having to draw them on. She leads small-group Pilates?both with reformers and mats?yoga, TRX training, and barre classes, which are limited to four students to ensure plenty of one-on-one attention. For those who prefer to fly solo, she provides personal training in her private Pilates reformer studio. And as a certified breast cancer specialist and instructor in the Pink Ribbon Program, Judy also holds post-rehabilitation classes for breast cancer survivors.
From the moment she found out she was going to be a mother, Victoria delved into her passion for natural and holistic alternative by learning about childbirth and studying different techniques designed to help women with their pregnancy and delivery. At Yogi Mami, she helps moms-to-be with trimester-by-trimester labor preparation and prenatal yoga that helps alleviate pregnancy pain, morning sickness, and an addiction to smelling the heads of Cabbage Patch dolls. She also helps moms get their bodies back in shape with Mommy & Me outdoor workouts.
