Instructors never run out of steam at BODYROK. It’s their job to keep the atmosphere upbeat and encourage students to push through their demanding Sculpt and Cycle classes. The 40-minute Sculpt classes heighten the core-toning effects of Pilates with cardio exercises on individual Proformer machines. The Proformer's resistance can be adjusted to accommodate any fitness level so first-time students can follow the workout and veterans can continue to challenge themselves. In Cycle classes, students hop atop Scwhinn A.C. Performance Indoor Cycle Trainers that use magnets to generate resistance instead of forcing riders to pedal through tubs of yogurt. The two workouts collide in the 50-minute Sculpt and Cycle class as students hop from Proformers to Schwinns for a blend of lower body- and core-focused training.
Despite its name, Pilates 4 Women Only is a multidisciplinary women’s fitness studio. While they do host Pilates classes, which build core strength and flexibility, they also teach their clientele the basics of TRX suspension training, yoga, and kettlebell lifting. Their instructors have especially savvy tips for safe prenatal workouts, and postdelivery workouts that burn baby weight.
At the end of a fruitful career that led her from the Cincinnati Ballet to the Sacramento Ballet, Jennifer Williams funneled her dance savvy into creating the barre-inspired exercise system taught at Pop Physique, a 2013 CityVoter finalist for Best Gym. Her fleet of handpicked and personally trained instructors pairs graceful ballet moves with other low-impact exercises in order to chisel cores without injuring muscles. Deep stretches further preserve tendons and leave each student more relaxed than a tortoise moseying past a state patrolman with a radar gun. Sessions run multiple times a day, seven days a week at an expanding network of SoCal locations. The roomy studios are lined with sprung dance floors and design accents that lend each location a distinct personality and a chance to forget its past as a storage room for defective food processors.
