Mission Hills Nursery draws from a long tradition of horticulture, as it was founded in 1910 by renowned green thumb and urban-green-space advocate Kate Sessions. Year after year, rows of roses, shrubs, and vegetables have sprung up under the staff's doting hands and dangled morsels of plant food. A section for gardening accessories equips yard workers with trowels, thorn strippers, and organic fertilizers to motivate crops without scourging them with caustic chemicals. In addition to tending to its plants, Mission Hills Nursery's staff arranges landscapes with garden-design services and teaches clients to arrange their own through gardening classes.

When they moved from Cleveland to San Diego in 1976, Ron and Carol Eisenberg brought with them more than just three kids and two dogs: they had a business idea, too. The Eisenbergs opened a shop that sold functional housewares in one section and greeting cards in another. They named the new business "Great News!" as a way to remind customers that the shop was constantly full of new items.

During the 1990s, the couple began transitioning their business into strictly cookware. In fact, Ron turned the old greeting-cards section into a fully functioning cooking school. Today, that school boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen, where instructors and celebrity chefs share their wisdom during a wide range of classes. Nearby, the 5,200-square-foot retail space equips students of the craft with all the tools, gadgets, and cutlery they need, as well as advice from a knowledgeable staff.

A lifelong artist, Davina Mendoza helps her students discover self-expression and self-confidence through the act of painting. During fun two-hour sessions, she takes them step-by-step through the re-creation of a single piece of art, teaching the necessary techniques for them to start painting on their own. Classes may focus on a Van Gogh–like abstraction of water or a Hawaiian sunset. She serves appetizers during each session and invites her students to bring their favorite grown-up beverages, such as bottles of wine or juice boxes that feature adult situations or strong language. Davina recently appeared on UTTV to demonstrate the therapeutic possibilities of art and creativity.
