At Dance with Melissa, guests learn the basics of ballroom and Latin dance styles using simplified techniques based on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. Group classes are capped at 30 participants, helping create a semiprivate atmosphere conducive to both learning and socializing.
Before she founded her eponymous ballroom school, Rhona Pick represented the United States at world dance championships in Berlin and London at famed venues such as Royal Albert Hall. Although she has since retired from dancing competitively, she culls from her experience to manage her school in accordance with the framed Code of Ethics that hangs on the office door. The code mandates that each teacher on her team holds professional teaching qualifications, a standard that guarantees the quality of the school’s private and group classes, in styles that range from salsa to tango and swing. Instructors can also choreograph wedding dances, ensuring that couples don’t have to spend their reception’s first song hiding in the supply closet.
Neither strictly “swing” nor particularly “goth,” Swing Goth is a dance studio that turns into a club when the sun sets, with nights devoted to steampunk or rockabilly bands. Those eager to revive the WWII-era Benny Goodman days had best look elsewhere, because this venue on the southeastern extremity of Potrero Hill is unabashedly contemporary – or, perhaps retro-modern. Lit and amplified like any club in SoMa, Swing Goth exists for fun’s sake, not purity’s. If your heart is just fine but you’re afflicted with terrible arrhythmia of the feet, Swing Goth is the perfect place to lose those inhibitions and let the beat move you. Even the congenitally nimble are welcome to swing through and learn some new steps, too.
ZFlow Fitness owner and Zumba instructor Stefanie Canahui first became a believer in the rhythmic fitness routine after shedding 70 pounds with the help of Zumba's motivating movement sessions. Licensed to teach four levels of Zumba—from basics to toning training and gold workouts—Stef leads classes that incorporate energetic dance motions, rhythmic steps, and high-energy Latin-inspired music to evict cupcakes that have overstayed their welcome and promote total-body weight loss.
A guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner, movement artist, and theater student, the owner of Embodying Self, Arona, harnesses more than 20 years' experience to train clients in movement practices that improve performance and prevent injury. Group and private lessons get bodies moving with tango, improv, yoga, and Feldenkrais techniques, which increase self-awareness through a focused attention on movement and touch. Arona guides classes with the student's experience in mind, encouraging experimentation with varying permutations to help them easily adapt to any floor space, partner, music, or mosh pit. The program aims to help improve balance and flexibility, and to address bodily pain and depression.
