  • Featherpistol Fitness
For more than seven years, performer LauraLynn Featherpistol tried every dance and dancelike performance technique she could get her hands on?from kung fu to ballet, lyra aerial performance, and trapeze. Those influences are apparent in her pole-dance work today, in which she incorporates aerial movement and dance into each of her alluring, acrobatic routines. She's used her portable pole to perform at festivals, theatrical showcases, and in venues ranging from museum galleries to high-tech stages. But her creative drive also compels her to do more than just perform: at Featherpistol Fitness, she passes on her knowledge of fluid, expressive movement to her students in pole fitness, aerial dance classes, and in the way she reads the newspaper.

  • Italian-American Social Club
Italian-American Social Club The Italian-American Social Club traces its roots back to the late 1920s, when a few men in the Excelsior District began meeting in a basement at 5 Russia Ave. The club quickly outgrew that location, and in 1940, it moved just down the block to 25 Russia Ave. To this day, customers still flock to that address to experience classic Italian dining at its finest: family-style portions of pasta carbonara and chicken parmesan, red- and white-checkered tablecloths, and servers who treat everyone like family. Lunch and dinner at the IASC take place every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and a full bar helps each visit turn into a celebration, even if the band of trumpeters that normally follows you around takes the night off. In addition to its restaurant, the Social Club is also home to a banquet hall that you can rent out for weddings and other special occasions.

  • Mam Art Cafe
Named in honor of the women in owner Paulo Acosta Cabezas’s life, Mamá Art Cafe creates a local hub for the output of creative energy and the intake of savory snacks. Mamá's baristas brew a lineup of specialty fair-trade organic coffees, with beans culled from Berkeley Coffee and Tea and served up hot and fresh from an array of roasts, flavors, and magic-beanstalk origins. The intimate café setting boasts an interior adorned with local and international artwork—with past art exhibitions showcasing Marta Ayala's paintings and Charles Anselmo's photographs—and the cafe regularly entertains with creative performances, such as dinner tango routines and live jazz music. Mamá Art Cafe's tireless effort to give back to the community earned the eatery a shout-out from then-Mayor Gavin Newsom with a 2010 Latino Heritage Award for Achievement in Business, as well as honors at the 2011 Annual Hispanic Business Salute.

  • Hot Yoga Ocean Ave
Hot Yoga Ocean Ave's team of certified Bikram and hot-yoga instructors believe that yoga is life, and share their passion with students of all experience levels, guiding them in achieving mental and physical wellness. Their philosophy emphasizes yoga as a practice, urging students to be patient with their progress and to move through poses modified to their abilities without pushing their muscles too far or blackmailing the hamstrings to hold standing bow pose longer than everyone else. Though the classes are open to students of all abilities, Hot Intro guides newbies through the 26-pose series and two breathing exercises, and the vigorous Surya Namaskara challenges yogis with a repeated sequence of 12 flexing and stretching poses to push limbs to their maximum range of motion. To help muscles sink deep into healing stretches and expel toxins through sweat, the studio is heated to balmy temperatures, so patrons are advised to drink lots of water and leave snowmen tied up outside.
