The Three Faces of Schubert’s Bakery

Exquisite Cakes

Some of the cakes at Schubert’s—such as the Opera, with its hazelnut-sponge, chocolate-truffle, and mocha-praline filling—have been around since the bakery opened more than a century ago. But whether it’s one of the shop’s classic cakes, or a newer one such as the Swedish Princess or Mango Mousse, you can be certain of two things: it will be delicious, and it will look almost too good to eat. To help you avoid the guilt of slicing into such masterpieces, Schubert’s conveniently sells many of its cakes by the slice.

Alternative Treats

Though cakes may be the bakery’s calling card, they’re not the only treats they specialize in. Drawing on various European traditions, the shop churns out pies, cherry and apple tarts, and even Danish-style pastries. There’s also a wide assortment of cookies to pick and choose from, plus hunks of coffee cake that are perfect for quick pick-me-ups.

Century of Sweets

No, you can’t eat slices of history, but you can certainly appreciate them. Throngs of locals and tourists alike continue to flock to Schubert’s to do just that, acknowledging the shop’s direct link to simpler times. German immigrant Oswald R. Schubert opened the bakery on Fillmore Street in 1911, and moved it to Clement Street during the 1940s. It’s been there ever since, and, despite several changes in ownership and the surrounding neighborhood, it still relies on the artisanal methods instituted by Mr. Schubert.
