      Bourbon and Branch

      Tenderloin (2558.9 mi)
      Beer / Wine; Cocktails
Though the admission process is decidedly less complicated than during its Prohibition-era days as a “cigar shop”, Bourbon & Branch still operates under a set of house rules designed to maintain its subdued atmosphere. Named after the old-fashioned term for bourbon and water, this modern-day speakeasy serves up small-batch liquors poured from hand-numbered bottles of Noah’s Mill and a handful of the only 1,200 bottles of Glenmorangie Margaux Finish in the country. The speakeasy's ability to conjure evasive spirits surely helped land them on Esquire’s list of Best Bars in America; the magazine said their cocktails “would have made a pre-Prohibition Broadway dandy nod in approval.” Despite the bar’s clandestine setup, the staff is far from secretive about their approach to mixing cocktails. The on-site Beverage Academy hosts an all-encompassing Cocktails 101 course, as well as sessions devoted to single liquors. In these classes, students can study gin’s escalation up the social ladder or examine how rum helped the cocktail become what it is today.

      Round Rock Honey

      Tenderloin (2558.9 mi)
      100% of 20 people
      Farming / Gardening / Beekeeping
Named Best Honey in 2008 by the Dallas Observer, Round Rock Honey's 100% natural local wildflower honey is harvested from more than 90 sites by owners Konrad and Elizabeth Bouffard and their crews of trained beekeepers. With precision, they remove the liquid gold from hives by centrifuge, ensuring that pollen, trace minerals, and complex sugars are never compromised during the honey harvest. They then pour the honey through a stainless-steel sieve to remove potential bee legs and wings, wax caps, and miniature tiaras before bottling it and selling it to specialty stores, farmer's market visitors, and online customers. A similar procedure happens in other parts of the country at Round Rock's beekeeping schools. During classes, Konrad Bouffard and Beekeeping Academy teachers impart their beekeeping knowledge upon suited-up students while they extract honey from a live beehive. Along the way, novices learn about the finer points of raising bees and keeping them healthy, as well as bee handling and lullaby-buzzing.

The Three Faces of Marrakech Magic Theater Peter Morrison Peter Morrison is the consummate performer. He's charismatic and charming, and his witty, but clean comedy makes his magic show something the whole family can enjoy. Peter's passion for magic shines through during his 75-minute shows, where, donned in a tuxedo, he performs everything from sleight-of-hand card tricks to cutting-edge illusions that leave viewers scratching their heads. Pre-Show in Sultan's Oasis The doors to Marrakech Magic Theater open one hour prior to every show. During this time, guests are invited to gather for cocktails and appetizers inside the Moroccan-style Sultan's Oasis lounge. But this isn't just any pre-show gathering—Peter visits with every group, getting to know his guests by name and performing magic tricks up-close-and-personal. It's a rare case of a performer doubling as his opening act, and it starts the evening on a friendly note. Intimate Parlor-Style Theater The theater’s intimate 45-person setup means there's not a bad seat in the house, placing all attendees mere feet from the stage. Subtle touches throughout make visits all the more enjoyable, starting with a candlelit entryway and continuing into the ornate, red-colored lounge. The elegant design might have you assuming the theater has been that way for decades, but think again: Peter did it all himself, right down to the chandeliers.

      Jasper's Corner Tap and Kitchen

      Tenderloin (2558.8 mi)
      Gastropub; Beer / Wine
Having proven his skill at inventing and handcrafting cocktails, mixologist Kevin Diedrich decided to tackle a second challenge: scale. He measured Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin into a keg, connected the keg to a line, and attached the line to the tap at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen. Now, his clients have negroni on tap alongside 18 kinds of beer. Kevin's knack for blurring the boundary between beer and liquor hardly ends here—in 2012, he earned the restaurant an award in SF Weekly for Best Place to Mix Beer and Booze thanks to such alcoholic hybrids as the Wiessen Sour, a white beer, bourbon, and orange marmalade combo. He's since added a second cocktail to the tap lineup, and still crafts individual specialty cocktails to complement a long list of artisanal wines and bottled beers. This emphasis on quality libations speaks to Jasper's function as a classy yet convivial place. It takes its name from Jasper O'Farrell, who planned San Francisco's Market Street as a social thoroughfare during the Gold Rush. The restaurant strives to capture his neighborly vision by broadcasting sports games, serving locally sourced pub dishes, and borrowing cups of sugar from businesses next door. The menu handily upstages traditional bar food with its entrees, all of which are designed to pair well with the bar's excess of 60 beers. House-made sausage and the J burger, layered with blue cheese and bacon onion marmalade, are served long into the night. Even the fries dress to impress, permitting diners to choose from thin, thick, or sweet potato fries adorned with different seasonings and poutine toppings.

Many tour guides are passionate about history, but not enough to break into song. That’s where Wild Wes Leslie comes in. Rather than burdening sightseers with the droning narration and mandatory 19th-century ankle boots of a typical city tour, Wes divulges the details of San Francisco’s famous neighborhoods with energetic and original ditties sung to the strums of his ukulele. Resplendent in his bow-tie and bowler hat, the troubadour leads groups on 2.5-hour walking tours that explore well-known areas such as Chinatown and Union square, along with lesser-known spots including the city’s first red-light district.

Theater / Theatre / Playhouse; Opera House
SHN brings Broadway productions to San Francisco with two highly acclaimed new shows. From the director of Rent, Next to Normal invites audiences to a modern rock musical about a suburban family striving to keep it together. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, The New York Times calls this overachieving show "more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical". Later in the season, Rock of Ages, a five time 2009 Tony Award nominee, captures the classic boy-meets-girl love story and zips it into a pair of tight leather pants. Set during the ’80s in LA's most famous rock club, a small-town girl meets a rock star, sparking an entertaining stroll through hair-metal history. Just like the psychological thriller The Notebook the story unfolds to guitar-exploding melodies from Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Pat Benatar, Night Ranger, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake, and others. Customers taking advantage of this deal will become subscribers and enjoy benefits such as free ticket exchange, first access to purchase additional tickets, invitations to special events, and free commentary from audience parrots.

      Le Colonial

      Tenderloin (2558.8 mi)
      Vietnamese; General Venue
Le Colonial's front door may be the closest thing to a time machine in downtown San Francisco. Spread across two levels, the restaurant embraces the cuisine and aesthetic of French Vietnam in the 1920s. "Picture slowly spinning ceiling fans, tropical plants, rattan furniture, and French colonial decor," Frommer's says. Along with the dining room's pressed-tin ceiling and the bar's decorative bamboo birdcages, these accents contribute to an atmosphere that mimics a stately French plantation in Vietnam. The chefs forge recipes that demonstrate the fusion of French and Vietnamese cultures while still incorporating ingredients from Bay Area farms. Brussels sprouts arrive glazed with sweet-chili sauce, and the twice-cooked pork belly is accompanied by pickled bok choy, quail egg, and savory truffle oil. The extensive wine list doesn't feature any bottles from Vietnam, but it does include a fair number from France as well as representatives from the New World and Atlantis. Though the courtyard and the main-level dining room invite diners to linger and enjoy their meals, the upstairs lounge area strives to create a livelier atmosphere. The tropically themed room hosts live bands and house DJs throughout the week. It invites guests to lose themselves in another time and place while still enjoying the creature comforts of a fully stocked bar and a pulsing sound system.

Then the real fun begins: built with the company's own software and a compassion for the voiceless robots of America, a talking GPS system guides two-seater GoCars through the city streets of San Francisco, San Diego, Miami, Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon with cheerful, info-rich narration. Second only to having a knowledgeable local jog alongside your minivan, tours zip along at drivers' own pace and accommodate as many pit stops as time allows.

Though the museum was originally envisioned as a permanent display for the artworks of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, the World Peace Prize winner worried that his paintings might grow lonely without the company of fellow masterworks, prompting the museum's board of directors to burst the doors open for a slew of exquisite pieces from around the globe. The museum’s collection now encompasses works by 30 major artists, including the hand-sculpted faux coral and flower vases of Dr. Yu Hua Shouzi Wang.

Sip on cocktails ($6–$10), toss back a beer ($4–$5), or splurge and use your Groupon toward bottle service (limit of one Groupon per table) at one of two VIP areas. Depending on the brand and type of liquor, bottles run from $200–$250. While sipping and socializing, sprawl out on curving, white leather couches tucked behind draped gold-chain curtains, providing camouflage for stealing dance moves and plotting the stealing of ketchup packets from fast-food restaurants.

Her stable of equally Meisner-steeped instructors leads classes including introductory adult courses, intensive courses for working thespians, and children's classes for young'uns looking to break into the industry early or convince babysitters they've been diagnosed with a life-threatening ice-cream deficiency.

      Dance; Dance Class
The staccato beat of conga drums rises over the deep voice of a bass guitar and the higher trills of the timbales and piano. Head dancer Evan Margolin and his bevy of experienced instructors lead students in classes that take beginners through basic footwork and salsa rhythms, with intermediate and advanced sessions offering salsa aficionados more challenging instruction. The social class structure—partners rotate throughout every session—creates a low-pressure learning environment and keeps dancers from scrambling to locate a partner or human-shaped tupperware container. The one-hour beginner classes are mostly filled with salsa novices and new dancers, and Dance SF's experienced and engaging local salsateers are patient and friendly when showing new students how to bust well-timed moves. During intermediate classes, which require six months or more of social dancing experience, students focus on timing and cross-body leads with turns. After some evening classes, new dancers are invited to join an all-night salsa party where they can put their new moves in practice. Students should wear comfortable clothing, which includes dancing shoes, but does not include rear-flapped onesie pajamas.

Mornings buzz on fresh brews by Bicycle coffee, an organic and sustainable brand of South American beans. Blow up inflatable brunch dates for plates such as pancakes fully loaded ($7.95) or stuffed french toast, aptly shoved with lemon cream cheese, fresh blueberries, whipped cream, and seasonal fruit ($7.50). Watch wall-projected movies as you nosh on house sliders ($10) or the vegetarian-friendly truffle mac 'n' cheese ($8). The name First Crush sounds like a case of puppy love, but when it comes to this restaurant, the love is actually between humans and a liquid—wine. The wine list doesn't stray outside of California vineyards, either. Its vintages come from both established growers and more indie operations, exposing guests to a full scope of state grapes by the glass, flight, or bottle. The street-level dining room complements its classy libations with small and large plates, ranging from lobster ravioli and local halibut to ribeye steak. The farm-fresh featured dish changes constantly, though thankfully not mid-bite. For a more curated experience, theatergoers can order a three-course prix fixe meal before taking in a show at the nearby Curran, Golden Gate, or Orpheum theaters. The brunch menu, meanwhile, stays eclectic with coconut pancakes and homemade mango jam, or duck confit served with a fried duck egg.

Musical-theater works find a stage and an audience through Not Quite Opera's platform of community engagement. The not-for-profit production company gathers playwrights, lyricists, composers, and other San Francisco artists to create performances that reflect upon the lives of fictional neighbors and probe into life's greatest mysteries—such as who would emerge the victor in a wrestling match, Abraham Lincoln or his bionic twin. Artistic director Anne Nygren Doherty, an award-winning playwright and songwriter, works side by side with producer/handyman hubby John Doherty and an evolving collection of area artists to mold music-theatrical fusions, such as the theater's longest-running show, Absolutely San Francisco. The one-woman performance follows Sunshine the Homeless Lady during her journey of personal discovery on a railcar, and was hailed by the San Francisco Bay Times as "fun and funny" and by Statler and Waldorf as "much better than anything Fozzie Bear's done."

The PGA instructors at SwingPlane Productions have a noble mission: make the game of golf more enjoyable for everyone. The team uses video swing analysis technology to help achieve this by providing instant, on-screen feedback of swing mechanics. A high speed Sony Action Cam camera breaks down players' swings frame-by-frame, revealing subtle flaws such as an awkward hitch in the backswing or the use of performance-enhancing hockey sticks. Lessons can be taken in person to combine the forces of video analysis and real-time professional advice or conducted over the internet, during which the instructor will analyze videotape of the student’s swing and prescribe specific drills to help improve results.

Those who shudder at the thought of a stuffy "dinner and dancing" date will be pleasantly surprised at Infusion Lounge. The surprises begin on the menu, a roster of Pan-Asian food created by Chef Evan Turner. Finger foods such as mini burgers slathered with wasabi aioli graduate into refined entrees, such as tea-scented coconut ribs with papaya-mango salad. The cocktail list similarly refreshes the senses, with lychee liqueur and pur?e adding an Eastern element to the classic bellini and bartenders spicing lemon-drop cocktails with a hint of ginger liqueur. The dining room's decor matches the striking menu; dim, red lighting casts an otherworldly glow over translucent columns as diners converse at white-clothed tables. All dinner guests receive a complimentary entry to Infusion's dance floor, yet another mod, surreal space. Here, orange and red neon light illuminates abstract, green latticework reminiscent of the vines in Pablo Picasso's garden. A steady stream of DJs and live music keeps feet moving, proving why Infusion Lounge was named an Open Table Diners? Choice winner in the Good for Groups and Vibrant Bar Scene categories.
