Live Fit Gym is much more than an athletic club—it's a wellness club where workouts are just the tip of the iceberg of health. The one-stop oasis features amenities that combine the best of the spa and fitness worlds, with its three locations offering healing treatments such as acupuncture, massage therapy, facials, and chiropractic services. And, more than earning the "gym" in its name, the spot boasts cardio equipment and free weights along with a variety of group classes. Core training and yoga sessions focus on creating toned, flexible forms, while unique offerings including samba workouts combine boot-camp cardio with boot-stomping tunes.
On the bottom floor of Civic Center Fitness, exercisers change clothes and shower before heading over to the weight room on the same level. On the second floor, they get their hearts beating on treadmills and cardio equipment. But there's even more cardio equipment on the top floor, along with a group cycling room, an aerobic room, and a stretching area, giving the center a diverse array of workout options. Experienced trainers only add to the offerings, as do convenient closed-captioned TVs.
With dual personal-training certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the National Council on Strength and Fitness and 10 more elective certifications in a range of specific fitness techniques, Russell Bui has more than enough knowledge to help his clients build fit, lean bodies. But that would be setting the bar too low. His principal goal is to help his clients live longer, happier lives by mending the body's imbalances and ailments to make it perform at its best, not by challenging it to its breaking point, but by gradually building a strong, healthy foundation. He achieves this with training programs that begin with an in-depth assessment to review his clients' athletic and medical history, determine goals, identify any muscular imbalances, and test if the biceps have a cartoonish reaction to canned spinach.
During Pranassage sessions, the client plays the same passive role as they would during a massage–but instead of having a therapist knead their physique, the therapist stretches it. The process relaxes muscles and feeds into to Pranassage's larger goal: holistic wellbeing. The clinic approaches this goal from a variety of other angles including nutrition coaching, which facilitates weight loss, and desire coaching, which helps couples reconnect without jamming their hands into a single pair of gloves.
After walking through the studio’s namesake entryway, visitors to Funky Door Yoga Polk Street are greeted by the grunts of Bikram practitioners carried on waves of steamy heat. The stretch dojo's seven-day schedule boasts early-morning, afternoon, and evening classes that take place in a classroom stoked to up to 105 degrees, the perfect temperature for facilitating flexibility or melting a corporate rival's ice statue in effigy. Students run through Bikram Choudhury’s 26 poses that pique muscles, organs, veins, and ligaments while the sweltering heat flushes toxins from the body. After a 90-minute session, students can hop into one of Funky Door Yoga Polk Street's showers, or down a bottle of water or sports drink available for purchase. The studio also stocks rentable mats and towels for greenhorn yogis not quite experienced enough to levitate.
The bright studio helps students fine-tune posework with wall-to-wall mirrors, and the expansive floor space affords enough space to execute even the most complex poses. Two nearby parking lots and metered parking afford convenient parking for car-toting students.
