  • California Institute of Integral Studies
Five Things to Know About CIIS Conscious Café Burrowed inside the California Institute of Integral Studies—on the third floor of the main building—Conscious Café jumpstarts brainpower with fresh, healthy food and fair-trade coffee. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you stop by: The food is local and organic whenever possible. It's also delivered fresh several times per week. Favorites include Indian curries crafted by a local Ayurvedic chef and tamales sourced from a popular stand at the Civic Center farmer's market. Its coffee comes from Costa Rica. There, workers who earn higher-than-average salaries use organic farming practices to grow the beans. The café gives you a $0.25 discount if you bring your own mug. You can even keep the mug at the café instead of carrying it around all day. Almost everything is compostable—plates, cups, and utensils. The lids used for hot drinks are the one exception. Since compostable lids tend to leak, the café uses recyclable ones instead. Rotating artwork from CIIS students covers the walls. The music also reflects the clientele: quieter tunes play during study times, and louder jams play during more social hours.
