Body Mechanix’s talented personal trainers, including a nationally ranked strongman and a Harvard grad, didn’t get buff all by their lonesome. Believing that encouragement and camaraderie make as much difference as weight and reps, they cook up ever-changing routines through collaboration with their fellow fitness gurus, a practice that allows them to share ideas and show off their ability to bench-press other bodybuilders. Individual lessons send clients sprinting across indoor stretches of turf or hiking heart rates with cardio and weight machines, whereas group classes help them sweat off inches with fast-paced boot-camp exercises or teach them how to jab out aggression with circuit boxing.
Bubblegum-pink decor welcomes customers to Susan Skin Care, where Susan and her staff tend to the beauty needs of all who enter. Hidden away in the building's lower level, this cozy oasis offers facials for men and women, laser hair removal, and noninvasive body-contouring treatments. They also zap skin tags and vascular blemishes during quick, knifeless sessions, and improve butterfly-kissing abilities with eyelash extensions.
GAEL Modern Health has aimed to help patients improve their health through state-of-the-art therapies for more than 20 years. The facility's health professionals emphasize a personal approach in their work, focusing on each patient's specific concerns while performing LipoLaser contouring treatments, colon hydrotherapy, and nutritional consultations within large, comfortable private rooms. The pleasant office accommodates English and Russian speakers, and boasts a no-wait policy.
Fathers usually teach their sons how to shave, but they don’t often cover how to splice veins and arteries together. Dr. Greg Buncke, however, learned just that from his father, Dr. Harry Buncke. The two worked the operating table together for more than 20 years, and Greg couldn't have had a better teacher; his father pioneered the concept of microsurgery, which enabled doctors to reattach limbs, replace fingers with toes, and replenish muscles in one part of the body with those from another. The younger Dr. Buncke learned much from the man who the San Francisco Chronicle called the "father of microsurgery.” That experience—along with his own studies at Georgetown, a residency at Stanford, and service as a member of several medical societies—informs his work today as a surgeon at the Plastic Surgery Institute of San Francisco.
Dr. Buncke co-directs the Plastic Surgery Institute of San Francisco alongside Dr. John Owsley, who has more than 40 years of experience in the field. Four other board-certified doctors fill out the rest of the clinic’s staff. The six doctors can claim specialties in different fields—including cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery—so the list of available treatments is extensive. On the surgical end, they perform face-lifts, chin and cheek implants, nose jobs, tummy tucks, arm lifts, and scar revision. They also oversee less-invasive procedures, as when an in-house aesthetician exfoliates skin with microdermabrasion and peels and plumps wrinkles with injectable fillers. Unlike people with crank-operated cell phones, the doctors have no problems sharing information; all procedures take place only after clients fully understand the process they will undergo.
Brazil native Miria Kutcher brings a decidedly Brazilian touch to the ambiance and services at Venus Bodywork. Kutcher may have learned her methods of rejuvenation at the San Francisco College of Cosmetology and the San Francisco School of Massage and Bodywork, but from cryotherapy cold wraps to hot Sudatonic wraps, the spa differentiates itself with an eclectic mix of European and South American treatments. She and her well-trained team help each client through a menu of noninvasive treatments, tackling everything from wrinkles and cellulite to unwanted body hair. These med-spa services are offered amid warm fixtures such as wicker chairs, hardwood floors, and even blue-brick walls—which were repurposed from a schoolhouse in Atlantis.
Siblings and board-certified surgeons Dr. Lisa Kang and Dr. David Kang share more than the same parents; they work together at Serenity MedSpa, where they both specialize in aesthetic procedures. Beneath shelves of Botox, Latisse, and glo minerals products, Clear + Brilliant laser systems hum. Like R2-D2’s high-school reunion, the rooms are crowded with high-tech machines, including Smartlipo, Cellulaze, Liposonix and Ulthera.
