Operated by Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, Sharks Ice skating centers professionally maintain solid-water rinks and facilities to accommodate a full range of activities. Each Friday night (7:30–9:30 p.m. in San Jose; 7:15–9:15 p.m. in Oakland) customers have full run of the centers' Olympic-sized rinks for public skating and fashionable displays of warm, Cosby-inspired outerwear. In addition to skating amenities, each Sharks Ice center features a full-service pro shop that sells NHL athletic apparel and other skate supplies and accessories. The centers also feature public snack bars and spacious public areas for socializing and frigid recitations of 18th-century Russian poetry. Sharks Ice San Jose also houses Stanley's Sports Bar, a full bar and restaurant overlooking the three rinks. Skate rental is included, but if you prefer to bring your own foot-blades, the general admission price without today's Groupon is $8, which still makes the Groupon the better deal. Hours are subject to change, so please call ahead to confirm.

A full-service recording studio, Tone Def facilitates aural artistry with an impressive array of production equipment and on-site engineers. Record a new single alone or with a crew of studio musicians, and let the expert sound technicians mix and edit the result until it's ready to make its debut on any home sound system or on Brian Eno's answering machine. This Groupon entitles artists to two copies of their in-studio recording, and additional CDs cost $5 each. For an additional $40, the studio’s audiovisual wizards can immortalize the entire session in video, perfect for sending as a gift to Grandma or her friends at MTV.

At this all-ages venue, eight-balls sink into upwards of 165 pockets inside South First Billiards, which houses nearly 30 9-foot pool tables. But they only take up a fraction of South First's 14,000-square-feet: the rest plays host to ping-pong and beer-pong tables, as well as foosball and air hockey. Despite the potpourri of games, South First isn't just a gaming venue. Rotating pieces by local artists adorn the walls, while an eclectic lineup of musicians, from rockers to rappers, grace the stage on live music nights. South First's bartenders complement any activity?whether playing, looking, or listening?with 12 microbrews on tap, as well as fruity and chocolaty handcrafted cocktails.

A former vaudeville performance space and movie palace built in 1928, the California Theatre of the Performing Arts hearkens back to a bygone era with its majestic Wurlitzer organ, which is played during silent-film programs, and a time portal linked to the childhood home of Alexander Pantages. The theater?s deep-red stage curtains and ornate, vaulted ceilings also steep the senses in a vintage ambiance. Thanks to this comforting nostalgia, as well as the heartfelt scenes that unfold onstage, the space seems much cozier than a 1,718-seat auditorium has any right to.

Its name may contain the word "museum," but The Tech Museum of Innovation prefers not to wallow in the past. Since its earliest days in 1978, it has exhibited the timeless principles of science while also celebrating the latest in technological achievement. In doing so, the institution inspires visitors to apply that same spirit of creative problem-solving to all aspects of life.

  • Size: the mango-and-azure domed building fills 132,000 square feet with hundreds of interactive exhibits and six labs
  • Hands-On Experiments: ride in a jet-pack chair worthy of NASA, feel what it's like to experience an earthquake, or grow jellyfish DNA in a lab
  • Eye-Catchers: the creations inside Social Robots, where visitors design and build robots before dressing them up in hats that a human could never pull off
  • Permanent Mainstay: The Tech Awards Gallery, a showcase of past inventions and inventors from the museum's annual Tech Awards
  • Visiting Exhibit: REBOOT:music lets you create modern music with high-tech devices; try the L?HA! Laser Harp, which substitutes laser light for strings
